LEARNING
:A teaching strategy

What is Cooperative Learning?
• is an approach to teaching where
students work in mixed-ability groups
and are partially rewarded for group,
rather than individual effort and
success.
• Students work in a group having
different tasks promoting a sense of
responsibility and positive
interdependence.
2
Cooperative
Learning
Characteristics
1. It has two important components,
namely:
• A cooperative incentive structure-
two or more individuals are
interdependent for a reward. They will
share if they are successful as a group.
2
Cooperative
Learning
• Characteristics
A cooperative task structure- a
situation in which two or more
individuals are allowed, encouraged or
required to work together on some
tasks, coordinating their efforts to
complete the task.
2
Cooperative
Learning
Characteristics
2.Students work in teams to tackle
academic tasks
3. Reward systems are group-oriented
rather than individually-oriented.
4. The interactions within the group are
controlled by the members themselves.
2
Cooperative
Learning
Characteristics
5.Teams are made-up of mixed
abilities-high, average and low
achievers.
6.Each individual learner is
accountable for his/her learning.
7.The group reflects on and evaluates
the group process they underwent.
6 Guidelines for
Effective Use:
Guidelines for its Effective Use In order to
implement cooperative learning
successfully, here are some general
guidelines to follow:
1. Heterogeneous grouping wherein high,
average and low achievers are mixed in a
group. It has been found out to affect the
performance of the group since the high
achievers can tutor the other members of the
group, thus raising the groups achievement
level.
6 Guidelines for
Effective Use:
However, homogeneous grouping may be
resorted to at times depending on the
objectives of the learning tasks.
2. Make sure that the students exhibit the
necessary social skills to work cooperatively in
group situations.
6 Guidelines for
Effective Use:
3. Arrange the furniture so that groups of
students can sit facing each other during
sessions. Provide adequate space for ease and
speed in movement.
4. Provide adequate learning tools so as not to
make others wait at a time they are needed.
6 Guidelines for
Effective Use:
5. Encourage students to assume
responsibility for individual and group learning
by offering rewards for achievement.
6. Make sure each group understands the
goals, procedures, tasks and methods of
evaluation.
Advantages: 5
The advantage of Cooperative Learning
for educators:
• More Effective Instruction: Cooperative
learning allows educators to differentiate
Le a f instruction and address the needs of diverse
learners.
• Increased Time for Individualized
Support: Cooperative learning frees up
educators to provide individual support to
students who require additional assistance.
D
Advantages: 5
• More Engaging and Interactive
Classroom Environment: Cooperative
activities create a more dynamic and
interactive learning environment, which can
Le a f make learning more enjoyable for both
students and educators.
• Improved Classroom Management:
When students are actively engaged in
cooperative learning activities, they are less
likely to misbehave or become disengaged

Advantages:
Advantages of Cooperative Learning for learners:
1.Responsibility- Cooperative learning is associated
with enhanced internal sense of control; students feel
more like origins than pawns. They take more initiative
and feel more responsible for the outcomes they
receive. They feel more effective. Their increased sense
of efficacy is realistic because in cooperative learning
they make more choices and have more input into what
and how to study. What they do makes a difference.
D
5
Advantages:
2. Ethnic/Race Relations- Not as many studies here, but
the effect sizes are even greater and more consistent than
with academic achievement. Heterogeneous cooperative
teams are the single most effective tool we as educators
and we as a nation have to transform race relations in
positive ways. In classrooms without cooperative learning,
there is increasing polarization along race lines over time; in
classrooms with cooperative learning, there is increasing
cross-race friendships and mutual understanding.
D
5
Advantages:
3. Self-Esteem. Students in cooperative learning teams
increase in feelings social and academic esteem. These
increases in self-esteem are realistic as the students in fact
do better academically and are accepted more by their
peers.
4. Empathy. Students in cooperative learning teams gain in
ability to take the role of the other and to understand and
empathize with the point of view and feelings of others.
D
5
Advantages:
5. Social Skills-. Cooperative learning increases a long list
of social skills, including listening, taking turns, conflict
resolution skills, leadership skills, and teamwork skills.
Students coming from cooperative learning classrooms are
more polite and considerate of others.
D
Disdvantages 7
Here are the disadvantages of Cooperative Learning for both
students and teachers:
1. Lack of Social Skills- Students who do not know how to
work together. Without instruction and structuring students will
put each other down, boss each other around, and fail to
resolve basic task conflicts (the topic for the team project) and
social conflicts
2. Group Grades. Team projects which have a group grade
create resentments and are unfair. One student does most or
all the work, the rest receive the grade.
Disdvantages 7
3. Lack of Diversity Skills. Once heterogeneous teams are
formed it is undeniable that high achievers looks down on low
achievers in the group.
4. Avoidance of Failure. A student is afraid to appear dumb
in front of his peers and masks the fear of failure by not
participating,
5. Between Team Competition. Only the best teams receive
recognition or rewards. After not winning several times, some
teams stop trying, finding it face-saving to say "We don't care."
They don't admit they really want to win and cannot.
4 How it will be use in teaching
mathematics in the primary grades.
Teachers can divide class into cooperative
groups of four.
1. Collection
2. Organization
3. Report Preparation
4. Presentation
Cooperative Learning generally occurs in 3
different ways:
1. Specific responsibilities within a larger group task.
2. Working together on a common project.
3. Taking responsibility for all group members'
4 How it will be use in teaching
mathematics in the primary grades.
Cooperative learning lessons should include 5
elements:
1. Positive Interdependence
2. Face-to-face interaction
3. Individual accountability
4. Interpersonal and small group skills
. Group processing.
