Answer Key Question and Variables Practice

The document outlines the scientific process, focusing on formulating scientific questions and identifying variables in experiments. It provides examples of experiments, including testing the relationship between balloon inflation and lung capacity, after-school club participation and U14 team selection, and comparing battery longevity. Each example includes a scientific question, independent and dependent variables, and three control variables.

Scientific Process

Learning Targets:

● I can write a scientific question using the

correct format.
● I can identify and write a control,
dependent
and independent variable.
Control Variable
What will be kept the same throughout the
experiment.

Independent Variable
What you change/compare in an experiment.
Dependent Variable
What you measure/result of your
experiment.
Instructions

For each of the scenario:

● Write a question using the format taught

in class.
● Come up with 3 control variables.
● Identify from your question the IV and DV.
Yousef decided to test if blowing up balloons increases the amount
of air in his lungs.

Question:Is there a relationship between the amount of

balloons you blow up and the amount of air in your
lungs?

Independent Variable:amount of balloons you blow up

Dependent Variable:the amount of air in your lungs

3 Control Variables:1. Same age group, 2. Same brand

of balloon, 3. Same color of balloon.
The school football coach thinks that students who join after school clubs
have a better chance at making the U14 team. He wants to design an
experiment to prove this theory.

Question: Is there a relationship between students who

join after school clubs and making the U14 team?

Independent Variable:students who join after school

clubs

Dependent Variable:making the U14 team

3 Control Variables:1. Same age group, 2. Same gender,

3. Same coach
Jana wanted to test which battery would last longer in her speaker. She
tested Energizer batteries and Duracell batteries.

Question: Is there a relationship between Energizer and

Duracell batteries and which lasts longer?

Independent Variable:Energizer and Duracell batteries

Dependent Variable:lasts longer (lifetime)

3 Control Variables:1.same size of battery, 2. Same

voltage (power) of battery, 3. Same speaker
