Systems of Measurement

The document outlines a lesson plan focused on the importance of standard units of measurement, highlighting the limitations of non-standard units and the differences between the English and Metric systems. It includes historical context, examples of measurement units, and practical applications in various fields such as sports, finance, and construction. The lesson aims to enhance students' understanding of measurement's role in real-world scenarios and improve their problem-solving skills.

OBJECTIVE
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
• Explain the importance ofS standard units of measurement
by recognizing the limitations of non-standard units.
• Solve problems involving English and Metric Systems of
Measurements; and
• Appreciate the precision and efficiency gained through
the use of standard measurement systems in real-world
scenarios.

Forms of
Measurement
A measurement is the result of measuring and is
usually expressed in numbers. You use measurement to
describe things such as the distance of your school from
your house, your weight and height, and the time you
spend doing your homework.
The Egyptians were the first group of people who used
measurements in building pyramids. They used unit
cubits. It was the first recorded unit of linear
measurement.
Some of the units and the body part they used are
shown below.

Cubit Span
The length from the elbow The length from the tip
to the tip of the middle of the thumb to the tip
finger. of the little finger of an
outstretched hand.
Fathom
The length across a
man’s outstretched
arms.

Inch
The length from the
tip to the first joint of
the thumb.
Digit
Foot
The width of the index

This system was termed later on as nonstandard

system of measurement.

English and
Metric Systems
of
Measurements
There are two standard systems of measurement that
developed: the English system and the metric system.

The units in English system are defined while the units

in the metric system are based on the powers of 10. The
English system is used in United States, Liberia, and
Burma.
The table below shows the commonly used units of
measurements of English system and their
equivalence.

Length Weight Volume

1 pound = 16
1 foot = 12 inches 1 pint = 2 cups
ounces
1 ton = 2000
1 yard = 3 feet 1 gallon = 8 pints
pounds

1 mile = 1760 yards

Example 1: Example 2:
Convert 6 feet to yards. Convert 30 inches to feet.

Solution: Solution:

Example 3:
Convert 1.5 miles to feet.

Solution:
The units in the metric system are based on the
powers of 10. The table below shown the base units
for measuring different quantities using the metric
system:

Quantity Base Unit

Length Meter
Mass Gram
Volume Liter
Power Watt
Since the metric system is based on the powers of 10,
you may recall the concept of multiplying and dividing
numbers by a base 10 decimal number to convert
from one unit to another.

base
kilo- hecto- deca- unit deci- centi- milli-
(k) (h) (da) meter (d) (c) (m)
1000 100 10 gram 0.1 0.01 0.001
liter
Example 1:
Convert 12000 grams to kilogram.

Solution:

Another way of converting units of measurements in the

metric system is by using metric line.
A metric line is a line that contains the list of metric
prefixes in order from largest to smallest.

kilo hecto deca base unit deci centi milli

Example 1
578.25 km = ______ dm

Solution:

km hm dam m dm

Therefore, 578.25__ __ becomes 5782500 dm.

Example 2
1045.8 cm = _______ dam

Convert 5 kilometers to meters.

Convert 2.5 liters to millimeters.

Instruction: Fill each blank with the correct answer (Note: Round off
your answer to the nearest whole number) and solve the following word
problems.
1) 85 yards = _____ feet
2) 3000 feeet = _____ yard
3) 6 inches = _____ centimers
4) Charlene is 5 feet and 7 inches tall. Her brother, Fred, is 1.7 meters tall.
Who is taller?
5) The school fair committee made a banner with a total length of 46
meters for the event. If 30.5 yards of the banner will be used to decorate
the school ground, how many yards of the banner will be left?
What are examples in real life involving measurement?
• Sports: Measuring athletic performance (times,
distance ,speeds)
• Finance: Measuring financial metrics (returns, risks,
volatility)
• Cooking: Measuring ingredients (cups, grams) for recipes
• Construction:Measuring rooms,materials (lumber, paint) for
building projects
• Health: Measuring vital signs (blood pressure, temperature,
height, weight)
REVIEW
TIME!
• Why do you think people in ancient times used body
parts as units of measurement?
• How do the Metric and English systems differ in how
they represent measurements?
• What do measurements help us achieve in our daily
lives?
• How do standard units and tools make solving real-
world problems more accurate and efficient?
• What was the most important idea you learned today?
