Definition of Organization Development
• Organizational
Development(OD)
– It is refers to the system wide
application and transfer of
behavioural science knowledge to
the planned development,
improvement and reinforcement of
the strategies, structures and
processes that lead to organization
effectiveness.(Cummings & Worley
2011)
Contributions of Some Well- known OD experts to Organization
Development

Michael Beer Organization development is a system wide process of data collection, diagnosis,
action planning, intervention, and evaluation aimed at enhancing congruence
among organizational structure, process, strategy, people and culture; developing
new and creative organizational solutions; and developing the organization self
renewing capacity. It occurs through the collaboration of organizational members
working with a change agent using behavioural science theory, research and
technology.

Warner Burke and David Bradford Based on a set of values, largely humanistic; application of the behavioural
sciences; and open systems theory, organization development is a system wide
process of planned change aimed toward improving overall organization
effectiveness by way of enhanced congruence of such key organization
dimensions as external environment, mission strategy, leadership, culture.
Structure, information and reward systems and work policies and procedures.
Important Concepts where OD applies:
According to Cummings and Worley(2011), they suggests that:

• OD applies to changes in the strategy, structure and/ or

processes of an entire system such as an organization as a
whole, groups/ teams and individual jobs.

• OD is commonly based on the application and transfer of

behavioural science knowledge and practice including
microconcepts such as leadership, group dynamics and
work design and macroapproaches such as strategy,
organization design and international relations.

• OD is basically concerned with managing planned change

and is not that typically associated with management
consulting or project management which tends to comprise
programmatic and expert- driven approaches to change.
Important Concepts where OD applies:(Continuation)

• OD mainly involves the design, implementation, and the subsequent

reinforcement of change.

• OD is much oriented to improving organizational effectiveness where it really

measures dimensions such as that OD affirms that an effective organization
is adaptable which means it can solve its own problems and focus attention
and resources on achieving key goals:
– an effective organization has high financial and technical performance
including sales growth, acceptable profits, quality products and services and high
productivity; and
– effective organization has satisfied and loyal customers or other external
stakeholders and an engaged, satisfied and learning workforce.
Major Trends Shaping Change in Organization
• Globalization. It has changed the markets and other
relevantenvironments in which organizations operate well as the
way they function.

• Informational technology. It has redefined the traditional

business model by changing performance and knowledge that are
used and the costs calculationof doing business.

• Managerial innovation. It has responded to the globalization

and information technology trends and has accelerated their
impact on organizations.
