Li-Fi Based Data Transmission 2 2
1. Introduction
• Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) is a wireless communication technology that uses light waves (LEDs)
instead of radio waves (Wi-Fi) to transmit data.
• Introduced by Prof. Harald Haas in 2011 during a TED talk.
• Works by modulating LED light intensity at very high speeds (invisible to human eyes).
• Data is received by a photodetector and converted back into electronic signals.
• Data is received by a photodetector and converted back into electronic signals.
• More secure than Wi-Fi since light cannot penetrate walls.
• Energy-efficient, as it uses existing LED lighting for both illumination and data transfer.

Key Methodology: Modulation techniques (OOK, OFDM) for encrypted transmission
Findings: Provides higher security compared to RF since light cannot penetrate walls
Application in Our Project: Integrates secure modulation methods for safe communication
3. Hybrid Li-Fi and Wi-Fi Systems
Focus Area: Integration with IoT/Networks
Key Methodology: Dual communication using Wi-Fi fallback
Findings: Ensures uninterrupted communication in case of light obstruction cc

3. Problem Statement
• Rapid increase in data demand is causing congestion in the limited RF spectrum (Wi-Fi,
4G/5G).
• Existing RF-based systems suffer from interference in sensitive environments (hospitals,
airplanes, industrial plants).
• Security issues arise in Wi-Fi since signals can penetrate walls and be intercepted.
• Need for high-speed, reliable, and energy-efficient wireless communication.
• The main challenge in a Li-Fi project is how to make it reliable, secure, and practical for real-
world use, while overcoming issues of coverage, interference, and seamless connectivity.

4. Novelty in Project
Dual Functionality: Integrating Li-Fi with smart LED lighting systems in real-time, so that the same lights used
for room illumination also provide secure, high-speed internet access without additional infrastructure.
Enhanced Security: Since light cannot penetrate walls, your system ensures room-confined secure
communication, unlike Wi-Fi.
High Data Rates: Demonstrates gigabit-level speed using visible light, overcoming RF congestion.
Energy Efficiency: Incorporating low-power LEDs to achieve both efficient lighting and communication.
Interference-Free Communication: Provides connectivity in RF-restricted zones (airplanes, hospitals,
underwater).
IoT Connectivity: Novel application of Li-Fi for smart home/IoT device interconnection.

5. Proposed Solution
To address the inefficiencies of traditional traffic signal systems, our project proposes an
Adaptive Traffic Control System that leverages real-time data from advanced technologies.
The key components of our solution include:-
1. LED Transmitter
• Standard or high-power LEDs used for both illumination and data transmission.
• Data is encoded into light using modulation techniques.
2. Driver Circuit
• Controls the modulation of LEDs according to input digital data.
• Ensures flicker-free operation for human eyes.
3. Photodetector / Receiver
• A photodiode or phototransistor to detect variations in light intensity.
• Converts received optical signals back into electrical signals.
4. Signal Processing Unit
• Microcontroller / DSP to decode and process signals.

6. Block Diagram of Proposed Model
This block diagram shows the architecture of your Adaptive Traffic Control System, consisting of two
main subsystems: Density Management and Emergency Vehicle Detection, each managed by
separate laptops and corresponding NodeMCUs.
• Webcam 1 (Left Side): Captures real-time video of the traffic to monitor road density. The video
feed from Webcam 1 is sent to the Master Laptop, where it is processed for traffic density
management using OpenCV or other computer vision techniques.
• Master Laptop (Density Management): Acts as the primary system responsible for managing
traffic flow by analyzing the density of vehicles. This laptop uses the webcam feed to determine
vehicle congestion and sends appropriate commands to the NodeMCU for traffic control
adjustments.
• NodeMCU (Traffic Control): Receives instructions from the Master Laptop and controls the traffic
lights based on real-time data (vehicle density). Controls the traffic light to ensure smooth traffic
flow.
• Webcam 2 (Right Side): Monitors for the presence of emergency vehicles. The video feed from
Webcam 2 is sent to the Slave Laptop, where it is processed to detect emergency vehicle sirens,
likely in conjunction with sound sensors.
• Slave Laptop (Emergency Vehicle Detection): Dedicated to detecting emergency vehicles using
sound sensors and video feed. This system detects the siren of emergency vehicles and then
communicates with the NodeMCU.
• NodeMCU (Sound Sensor Emergency Detection): Controls the traffic signals to prioritize the
emergency vehicle, clearing its path by adjusting the traffic lights accordingly.
• Traffic Light: The traffic light receives control signals from both NodeMCU systems (density
management and emergency detection) to optimize traffic flow and prioritize emergency vehicles.

Why Li-fi over Wi-fi
Li-Fi is chosen over Wi-Fi for several key reasons:
1.Faster Data Speeds: Li-Fi uses visible light spectrum which offers ultra-high bandwidth, enabling
data speeds much faster than typical Wi-Fi, reaching up to hundreds of gigabits per second.
2.Better Security: Since Li-Fi signals cannot penetrate walls and are confined to the illumination area,
it provides inherently enhanced security compared to Wi-Fi, which broadcasts through walls and is
prone to external interception.
3.No Radio Interference: Li-Fi does not use radio waves, so it avoids interference from other wireless
devices common in Wi-Fi environments, making it ideal for sensitive locations like hospitals and
airplanes.
4.High Data Density: Li-Fi can support more connected devices in the same area by using multiple
LED lights as separate access points, reducing network congestion.

11. Conclusion
Li-Fi is an innovative wireless communication technology that uses visible light to transmit data
at extremely high speeds, offering superior bandwidth and enhanced security compared to
traditional Wi-Fi. It provides reliable, interference-free connectivity with energy-efficient
advantages by combining lighting and data transmission. While it has limitations like range and
line-of-sight requirements, Li-Fi holds great promise for future applications in smart cities,
healthcare, aviation, IoT, and secure communications, making it a key technology for the digital
future.

12. Future scope
• Enhance Security and Privacy: Li-Fi’s line-of-sight communication and inability to penetrate
walls provide secure, contained wireless networks ideal for banking, defense, healthcare, and
government applications demanding confidentiality.
• Development of Li-Fi Devices and Standardization: Manufacturers are expected to produce
smartphones, laptops, and IoT devices with built-in Li-Fi capabilities, enabling wider adoption.
Standardization efforts will ensure interoperability and commercialization for mass use.
• Energy Efficiency and Environmental Benefits: Li-Fi leverages LED lighting infrastructure for dual purposes
of illumination and data transmission, promoting energy savings and sustainable development in smart
buildings and infrastructure.
