GENERAL MATHEMATICS
COMPOSITE FUNCTIONS
Definition:
Let f and g be functions. The composite
function denoted by (f ◦ g) is defined by
(f ◦ g)(x) = f(g(x)).
The process of obtaining a composite
function is called function
composition.
GENERAL MATHEMATICS
COMPOSITE FUNCTIONS
Example: Given the following functions,
f(x) = 2x + 1 q(x) = x2 - 2x + 2
Find:
a. (g ◦ f)(x)
b. (q ◦ f)(x)
c. (f ◦ p)(2)
d. (r ◦ p)(5)
GENERAL MATHEMATICS
COMPOSITE FUNCTIONS
Example: Given the following functions,
f(x) = 2x + 1 q(x) = x2 - 2x + 2
a. Find (g ◦ f)(x).
GENERAL MATHEMATICS
COMPOSITE FUNCTIONS
Example: Given the following functions,
f(x) = 2x + 1 q(x) = x2 - 2x + 2
b. Find (q ◦ f)(x).
(q ◦ f)(x) = q(f(x))
(q ◦ f)(x) = (fx)2 - 2(fx) + 2 ; Replacing f(x) in the x of function q
(q ◦ f)(x) = (2x+1)2 - 2(2x+1) + 2; Substituting the value of f(x)
(q ◦ f)(x) = 4x2 + 4x +1 – 4x – 2 + 2; Applying square of
binomial and distributive property
(q ◦ f)(x) = 4x2 + 4x – 4x + 1 – 2 + 2; Arranging the terms
(q ◦ f)(x) = 4x2 + 1 ; Simplifying the expression
