The Beijing Declaration: 30 years of progress

In 1995, at the 4th world conference on women in Beijing, world leaders agreed a plan to achieve equal rights, opportunities, power, and safety for women and girls. In March 2025, a report from the UN secretary-general highlighted that great progress has been made on gender equality and women’s empowerment. Despite progress, the report stresses that gender discrimination is still ingrained in the world, preventing gender equality and impeding its ability to transform societies. With this collection of selected articles and commentaries, journals from the Nature Portfolio wish to celebrate the achievements that have been made, emphasize areas where progress is needed and bring to the fore ideas offering a path forward. Nature Portfolio journals welcome further submissions of research articles and commentaries that will contribute to accelerate the path to gender equality.
