Commissioner Mal Lanyon APM

Commissioner Mal Lanyon is the 24th Commissioner of the NSW Police Force.

Commissioner Lanyon joined the NSW Police Force in 1987. He has extensive experience in general duties having performed duty at various locations including Balmain and Glebe, before entering the Criminal Investigation field as a Detective, including in the Drug Enforcement Agency and Homicide Squad. He has also been a Duty Officer and Crime Manager working at Blacktown, Penrith and Mount Druitt Police Area Commands.

Following his promotion to Superintendent in 2008, Mr Lanyon held various roles including Commander Firearms and Regulated Industries Squad and Commander Gangs Squad before being promoted to the role of Director Organised Crime Directorate.

In 2013, Mr Lanyon was promoted to Assistant Commissioner and served as the Commander Special Services Group, overseeing the covert capability of the NSW Police Force as well as marine and airborne capability.

In 2017, Mr Lanyon was appointed to the position of Commander State Crime Command, with responsibility for high level criminal investigations relating to serious and organised crimes across New South Wales.

Mr Lanyon was promoted to the position of Deputy Commissioner Corporate Services in 2019, holding responsibility for a range of areas which deliver capability to the NSW Police Force in the areas of people, finance, process and technology.

In 2021, Mr Lanyon was appointed to the position of Deputy Commissioner Metropolitan Field Operations and its 9,500 staff.

This role covered the three Sydney Metropolitan Police Regions made up of 31 Police Area Commands, the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, and the Police Transport and Public Safety Command which includes the Police Transport Command, Major Events and Emergency Management Command, Marine Area Command, Aviation Command, and the Dog and Mounted Police Command.

Mr Lanyon has also performed the role of Chief Executive Officer of the NSW Reconstruction Authority, guiding the state’s natural disaster management efforts and recovery after significant events including floods, storms and bushfires.

Mr Lanyon was sworn in as the Commissioner of the NSW Police Force on 1 October 2025, becoming just the 24th person to hold the title in the organisation’s 160 year history.

Commissioner Lanyon has been presented with several awards including the Australian Police Medal, National Police Medal, National Medal 1st clasp, New South Wales Police Medal, 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th clasp to NSWPF Police Medal. He has several post graduate qualifications including a Bachelor of Social Science from Charles Sturt University, an Associate Diploma of Criminal Justice from the University of Western Sydney and a Graduate Certificate in Applied Management. He is also an ANZSOG Executive Fellow, a Vincent Fairfax Fellow and has completed the ANZPLS.
