What do I need to install a home charger?

  • Off-street parking: A private off-street parking space, such as a driveway or garage, is essential for installing your own charger.
  • Freeholder permission: If you live in a block of flats or a rented property, you'll need to obtain permission from the freeholder before installation.
  • Electrical safety check: If you own or rent a property built before 2008, and are planning to install a Toyota HomeCharge, we will arrange for British Gas to check your electrics are up to standard free of charge. Not all properties are suitable for an EV charger, and some may require electrical work before installation.

Smart Charging is an intelligent feature that helps you charge your vehicle in the most cost-effective way.

After you share your home energy tariff, the time you need your vehicle ready, and your desired battery level, Smart Charging creates a personalised charging schedule. It automatically charges your vehicle at the best times to help lower your energy costs, while still ensuring it’s ready when you need it.

Once you’ve entered your home energy tariff, the time you need your vehicle ready, and your desired battery level, Smart Charge takes care of the rest. It creates a personalised charging schedule that aims to minimise your charging costs while ensuring your vehicle is charged to your preferred level on time.

When you plug in, Smart Charge begins with a short 15-minute charging session to assess the available charging speed and power. After this, it prioritises charging during your off-peak tariff window to reduce costs, and intelligently manages any remaining charge outside of that window to ensure your vehicle is ready when you need it.

Smart Charging helps you ensure you reach your preferred battery charge level, and inteligently prioritises your off-peak charging schedule. You don't need to remember when to plug in or unplug your vehicle; simply let us know when you will need it, plug it in, and we’ll take care of the rest.

This allows you to ensure you always have enough battery, without relying only on a shorter off-peak window.

To set up Smart Charging, you will need a Toyota electric vehicle (EV) or plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), your own Toyota HomeCharge wallbox. The MyToyota app is also essential for setting up and managing this feature.

Yes, you can override Smart Charging at any time via the MyToyota App. This allows your vehicle to begin charging immediately, bypassing any existing schedules or restrictions.

Once you unplug the vehicle, Smart Charging will automatically reactivate, and your next charge will be optimised as usual. If you'd prefer to pause Smart Charging for more than one session, you can also disable it directly within the app.

Please note: Charging outside of your optimised schedule, especially during peak tariff times, may result in higher charging costs.

^Indicative charge time, for comparison purposes. Actual charging times may vary depending on various factors, including the selected vehicle (and battery option, if available), the age, type, condition and temperature of the charging unit and the battery, the starting charge, the power supply to and usage of the charger and the environmental conditions at the point of use. Charge times will be longer in colder weather and if battery temperature activates safeguarding technology. 150kW+ chargers are available in mainland Great Britain primarily on major arterial routes – see Zap Map for details. They are not yet available in Northern Ireland and availability is limited in Scotland, Wales and in rural areas.
