A Toyota Hybrid combines a petrol engine with an electric motor. It can switch seamlessly between petrol and electric power, or pure electric power. The hybrid battery charges automatically while you drive—through regenerative braking and coasting—so there’s no need to plug it in.
A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), like the Toyota bZ4X, runs solely on electric power. It doesn’t have a petrol engine and must be plugged in to recharge the battery.
Charging a Toyota electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle is simple and flexible. Most people charge at home. On longer journeys you can use one of thousands of public charging points across the UK.
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) can be charged in three main ways:
- Rapid and ultra rapid charging (43kW–150+kW): The quickest way to charge your electric vehicle. These chargers are available at thousands of public locations across the UK. Ideal for topping up on longer journeys.
- Fast charging (7kW–22kW): These chargers are commonly found at workplaces, public car parks, and can also be installed at home. They offer a convenient and efficient way to charge your vehicle.
Slow charging (up to 3.7kW): You can even use a standard 3-pin plug socket at home. While slower, it can be a handy option for overnight charging.
Plug-in hybrids can be charged using fast or slow methods.
When you purchase a Toyota battery electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid, you’ll receive two charging cables:
3-Pin Plug Cable
Ideal for slow charging at home using a standard domestic socket. Convenient for overnight charging when time isn’t a concern.32A Type 2 (Mennekes) Cable
Used for fast charging at home with a dedicated EV charger, or at public fast charging stations.
For public rapid chargers, there’s no need to bring your own cable—these chargers come with a built-in cable. Simply plug it into your vehicle and follow the on-screen instructions.
The driving range depends on the model, driving conditions, and your driving style. For example, the Toyota bZ4X offers an impressive range of up to 318 miles* when fully charged, making it ideal for both daily commutes and longer journeys.
Just like petrol, diesel or hybrid vehicles, the range of an electric vehicle can vary based on several factors:
Driving style – Smooth, steady driving helps maximise range.
Weather conditions – Cold temperatures can reduce battery efficiency.
Use of features – Heating, air conditioning and other systems can affect range.
- Terrain – Hilly routes may use more energy than flat ones.
Toyota electric vehicle batteries are engineered for durability and performance. For peace of mind, every battery comes with a manufacturer warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles.
You can extend this warranty to up to 10 years by completing regular servicing at an authorised Toyota dealer, helping ensure your vehicle stays in optimal condition for years to come.

Electric range figures were achieved using the WLTP test procedure and are provided for comparison purposes. Only compare CO₂ and electric range figures with other cars tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which depend on various factors including the starting charge of the battery, accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load.
