I feel like fedi might enjoy this question:

You're now an email provider (congrats/commiserations!). Your primary customer base has no fixed device to access their email from. They only access their email through public or shared computers. How would you design your service to let these customers securely access their email? How would you handle lost or forgotten passwords?

Bonus challenge - these customers also don't have smartphones, and are on limited/pay-as-you-go plans that mean you can't always rely on reaching them via phone.

management, especially for /#tech minded people, can be a very personal thing. I’ve been refining my email setup over the last couple of years and I think I’ve landed on a system that works well for me. I’m curious how others handle it.

My setup involves three separate email providers, .de, .com, and .net. I also use a custom domain combined with a paid (now just ) account.

Tuta is for strictly personal stuff like banking, medical, and government accounts. Secure, no aliases, separate app, fully contained.

For Posteo and Riseup, I use AnonAddy aliases for everything else. Mail forwarded from Addy is encrypted with my PGP keys and decrypted client-side, and both Posteo and Riseup use server-side encryption.

Posteo is for things I actually care about, online accounts, family, friends, etc. Riseup is for online shopping, newsletters, and more disposable accounts (zero inbox).

I’ll admit it’s a bit convoluted, but it makes sense to me and has worked well so far. I’ve considered simplifying it, and maybe I will one day. I don’t need three providers, but I like keeping things isolated.

Perhaps of interest to those who : I’ve created a milter for checking IP addresses and HELO and MAILFROM domains against @spamhaus DNSBLs during the relevant SMTP transaction stages. Connections from listed IPs/domains are rejected: github.com/danielcolquitt/spam

Many MTAs (such as postfix) natively support DNSBL rejections at all SMTP stages, but other MTAs (and particularly mine) do not. Dropping spammy connections as early as possible helps reduce server load. The milter follows @spamhaus best practice: spamhaus.org/resource-hub/emai

You're right, this is weird and I'm not entirely sure what's going on. I was able to get it to fail with some combinations, pass with others, and thought I had it figured out until I tried some other cases and those contradicted what I thought I'd established.

As to what's going on - I have a guess, but I'm not confident about it. I think it might be triggering only when an -encoded segment of the header field value either exceeds the message's policy's line length limit, or in some way crosses over that boundary (such as having leading unencoded ASCII without a whitespace break that would allow the line to fold before the encoded segment).

If this is the case, it looks like a bug to me, too. If it's still happening with the most recent version of Python, I'd say it needs fixing. I haven't tried anything past 3.11.x right now.

Only showing up using the EmailMessage class vs Message class is explainable; there are slight differences, and one is for legacy code compatibility.

                        Weird.

Does anyone know the right way to create an header containing a colon with the email package from the standard library? If I just give it a string containing one I think it confuses it with the field name delimiter and attempts to fold the header in an invalid way, which results in an exception from a later validation stage.

I'm not even sure what's supposed to happen here. Are unescaped colons permitted in the values of email headers, and therefore there's a bug in the folding algorithm, or do they need to be escaped somehow? If so, are escaped words the right way to do it? I'd imagine that having a colon in an email subjet came up before the advent of MIME.

A scammer sent this to my mother, and I am thankful she knows better (years of teaching her to be cautious for her own good).

The email itself addresses her by the wrong name and claims she will be billed over $300. The attached PDF file, which I have no doubt would have caused trouble had she been using Microsoft Windows (she’s using an immutable copy of Linux), does not call her by name. Instead, it simply uses her old email address.

The goal of this scam is a triple treat.

First, to get you to open the PDF file. I cannot stress enough: do not open a PDF file or any file attachment sent by email if you don’t know the sender or aren’t sure about its legitimacy. I opened it in an immutable system, within a virtual machine, just to show you these screenshots.

Second, the goal is to make you panic, assume someone is charging you through PayPal, and, since you’ve opened that PDF file, they will have front-row seats to what you're doing as you likely check your banking and PayPal information.

Third, they want you to call the number they’ve listed, which they’ve made the primary focus of the email.

Microsoft Outlook problems: how to export all emails? [SENSITIVE CONTENT]

But, the "File - Export" menu command is greyed out. The right-click and "forward" is also greyed out when selecting more than 3 or 4 emails.

Available is the account either online on a browser, or also on a MacOS desktop.

Is there any way to export all emails as an .mbox or as individual .eml files? Or to forward them all?

At the moment, all we could do is search month by month, select all for the month, and print to PDF. Generates ~50 MB PDF files without images and without attachments, but it's better than nothing.

I guess webmail has somewhat spoiled interest in proper email clients, unfortunately.

Also related to the declining development of email clients, I believe it is this current obsession with synchronous instant messaging that is a menace to mental health.

I once heard a colleague in the university's IT department telling another that he thinks people who use anything other than :google: Gmail in a browser are dumb. I think the opposite!

What do Fedi people think about email service? I'm pondering my choices in case of degoogling and finding a good email provider isn't easy.
                                                  Here's my criteria:
                                                  1) It's an email provider. Not everything-you-never-needed in one ugly unwieldy box and a stupid AI on the side.
                                                  2) I don't care about so called privacy and encryption, it's a marketing fad. These services are just huge targets for governmental blocking. So wherever you cool hackers are, I'm staying away. I want to be with common people. I don't want to be a collateral damage.
                                                  3) I don't care about Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, etc. Whatever I write on the Internet could be written on the wall, for everything else there is PGP.
                                                  4) I care about respectability and stability. So this service has to be in business for at least 10 years and not run by a group of enthusiasts.
                                                  5) POP3/IMAP support without restrictions.
So this leaves me with two options: and
Fastmail is great, I used it in the past when it was twenty something dollars a year, but now it's too expensive. $5 a month and most features are overkill. 60Gb of space is ten times more than all my working documents combined.
Posteo is cheap and affordable, 2Gb is more than enough. But I don't really know if it's good and reliable.
Other sane alternatives are welcome, of course.

So I had this idea for a communication hub app, but I can’t make it. Basically, it will be first because that’s still important in the world. Then for messaging built-in because it is based on email isn’t it? A secure phone calling feature over your cell or WiFi connection. And a secure and private video calling feature. And then a penpal feature that is anonymous until you agree to share who you are and you can have letters that open within it, with your own seal just for fun. Also, the last part - ActivityPub Integration so we can have decentralized social media in it. Of course all this stuff opt-in.

This would be able to be set as “default” for “Phone”, “Email”, and “Messages” and whatever else makes sense. It keep all your data on device as much as possible, and you decide what has access to it via a unique cryptography key that you never have to interact with, but the device and app handle it in the background, no server unless it is absolutely necessary. Also can be integrated into a desktop browser workflow, for both business and non-business.

But how could this work, and what should it be called?

What else communication wise should be in it? It’s just an idea I had. I don’t know how well it would work, but it sure would be fun.

Sometimes when I’m sitting doing nothing, and waiting - I think a lot about this stuff.

Two of us, me and the Michael Lawrie who basically brought the Internet to Southern Africa, would swap emails and chat a little every time. The other one, the guy who owned IBM's OS/2, would accept the emails, but never once said thank you to either of us.

I noticed he has since changed his name to Mike Lawrie - So I guess we won. Last I heard, my more friendly namesake was doing well, automating his retirement home :D

I use Thunderbird on my android phone for my email hosted through my web hosting provider, my domain (different registrar). For some reason, I can send and receive just fine, but on my phone, when I send it, it doesn't save my sent email. It makes it to the receiver just fine, but I have no record of sending it, let alone what I've sent. When I check my Thunderbird on my Mac, it's also not there, but when I send from the Mac, it saves to my sent emails.

It's been like this from the beginning. I've tried a couple things, but I haven't had the time or energy to solve it, so I just haven't deep dived.
