Today in Labor History January 1, 1934: A "Law for the Prevention of Genetically Diseased Offspring" went into effect in Nazi Germany. The Eugenics research that Hitler used to justify torture and genocide was inspired by similar research from the U.S. The American eugenics movement originated in the 1880s, from the biological determinist ideas of Francis Galton. He believed that selective breeding could improve the human race and allow them to direct their own evolution. The U.S. eugenics movement was heavily funded by the Carnegie Institution, Rockefeller Foundation and the Harriman railroad fortune. Biologist Charles B. Davenport founded the Eugenics Record Office (ERO) in 1911. The ERO trained field workers, who they sent to study people in mental hospitals and orphanages across the U.S. Davenport and others began to lobby for solutions to the problem of the "unfit." They lobbied for immigration restrictions and sterilization. Some even promoted the idea of extermination, well before Hitler became known for it. Some well-known eugenicists of the early 20th century included Alexander Graham Bell, Luther Burbank and Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger. The eugenics movement tended to target the poor, people with disabilities and mental illness, and communities of color as “unfit” for society. Their solutions included forced sterilization, which continued in the U.S. until as recently as 2010. From 1997-2010, California performed nonconsensual sterilizations on roughly 1,400 women prisoners. From 1929-1973, North Carolina sterilized the third highest number of people in the United States, roughly 7,600 people, predominantly African American women.

I remember this day well. It was an excellent family bonding day. We had a nice dinner after a short walk together. 3 months after this photo was taken, Dad had to go to ER for a leg muscles issue. He was infected with covid by unmasked hospital staff. It happened shortly after our eugenics government removed public masking mandates. Dad ended up dying from covid related cardiac arrest, the following Summer.

A former “friend” told me he cared for me & wanted me to have everything I needed… but that it was time I realize I’m a net negative in society.
He referenced my “free surgeries”, countless ER trips & how the system was artificially extending my life.
He said he had given this a lot of thought, but that he realized he was sick and tired of his taxes supporting people who can’t contribute economically.
That wanting me to have good care was hypocritical since he doesn’t support handouts on “principle”
He said sorry. He said he knew he was being hurtful. But he felt I lacked the ability to understand where he & people like him were coming from
That it doesn’t matter what I contributed in the past or what I contribute in the future, no one has a “right” to be a drain on others
He said that people like me are the reason people like him can’t get ahead.
That he never consented to providing hand outs to disabled or poor people.
That he doesn’t feel his tax dollars should be spent this way.
Shocked and hurt, I asked if he felt I should just die?
He said of course not, but that was his emotions and love for me getting in the way of common sense.
That while he would never advocate killing others, we shouldn’t have our lives “artificially extended”
He felt that by providing healthcare and/or the bare minimum in social supports, society is going against nature.
It’s prolonging the lives of those who would have died at any other point in our history.
“Survival of the fittest”
But here’s the thing, that’s not what survival of the fittest means. It’s not what it ever meant.
Survival of the fittest refers to those with the capacity to adapt.
Not those who are the strongest or the most healthy.
My friend can’t adapt. The only way he can survive is by punching down on others.
Any perceived failings in his own life are the direct fault of someone less fortunate than him.
That’s not “fit”…
It’s denial.
Disabled people like me have an incredible ability to adapt
I’ve had to overcome so much in my life, including trying to survive nearly 6 years of a global pandemic where most of society has opted to leave me by the wayside.
I’m a fighter. We all are.
This is ableism at its most ugly. This is a person who’s embraced eugenics whole heartedly and yet somehow manages to convince themselves they’re noble and “strong”.
He firmly believes he’s better than someone like me, despite having lost his moral compass ages ago
We can and must be better than this. We must call out this behaviour whenever it happens, because it causes untold amounts of damage.
We all have worth. We all have value. No one is expendable.
As soon as we allow people to debate the worth of other’s within society, we’ve lost.
We must work together to ensure our most vulnerable are taken care of, because in doing so we build a safer and more inclusive society for everyone.
This conversation inspired me to write an article about why we undervalue the lives of disabled people.
My “friend” may have been unique in his bluntness, but many people think this way.
They vote for it. They support it. We deserve better:

We hear of a few, but most barely make the news.
Cases like Randall Alberto Gamboa Esquivel.
He was in perfect health when ICE detained him.
He disappeared in June & by August was in a vegetative state.
ICE deported him anyways.
They literally put a man who was at death’s door on a plane to Costa Rica.
Doctors there found he had encephalopathy, rhabdomyolysis and the inability to eat on his own.
What happened to him in ICE custody to cause this?
He died a few weeks after deportation:

When you become disabled there’s a few things you notice right away:
Ableism is everywhere.
People will abandon you. Even those you were certain would stick by you.
Just because something is illegal or against human rights code doesn’t mean it’s not happening ALL the time
Accessibility is not what it should be.
People will blame you for your disabilities. It won’t matter what you do or how hard you try, you won’t be “good enough”
All the misconceptions you had about disabled people were wrong.
That’s really the crux of it.
Disability is a minority group you can join anytime.
Most people will experience disability in their lifetime
Yet discriminating against us is not only common it’s socially acceptable.
Most people don’t realize how misguided they are until it happens to them
Many of us living with chronic illness had the same preconceived notions about disabled people until we became disabled ourselves
We thought it wasn’t “that bad”.
We believed we would be the exception
Many of us became advocates because the realization that we were so horribly wrong shook us to our core.
If we had that much ableism to work through, then so does everyone else.
That’s why we need strong allies.
We need people who will say disabled lives matter.
We need to shift the public perception away from the idea that disability is a moral failing.
We need to be visible, take up space and help people realize that all health is temporary and disability happens to almost everyone.

Disabled people know how to live in a world that wishes we would die. Technology has long been in the business of writing disabled and otherwise oppressed people out of the future. The chapters of this book describe technological projects that enact eugenics through medical exclusion, educational exclusion, employment exclusion, and incarceration which produce layers of stratification and removal of disabled and oppressed people from public life. With every breath, disabled people write a disabled future, one in which we all belong, regardless of the circumstances of our births or the collisions of our fragile flesh with a harsh and sometimes toxic earth. Disabled articulations, our sociotechnical assemblages, chart a new future for us all by undermining what we believe is possible in the present.
This book has been an exercise in working my own way out of hopelessness. Sometimes, it can feel as though the structures of oppression are fractally distributed in never-ending spirals (Williams 2021). These structures become legible at every layer of our sociotechnical world, not merely because oppression has been built into technology, but because the structures of oppression are human. This revelation is not cause for despair but for hope and for action. Fundamentally, oppression is about human relationships — specifically toxic ones, neglectful ones, and domineering ones. We often talk about human relationships as a way out of our contemporary dystopia (Hayes and Kaba 2023; Piepzna-Samarasinha 2018; 2022), and I believe that, firmly. However, we sometimes interpret our social problems as stemming from absences of relation, from which relation will save us. Instead, it is necessary to understand that while our current relations are ones of alienation and subjugation, they are still relations. We are not tasked with building relations where there previously were none, but with forging new relations, healing relations, and growing relations away from toxic and hateful ones. This configuration requires that we acknowledge our role in oppression. We must abolish our internal metaeugenic logics, our ideologies of replacement, and our fascist alienation and domination as a part of this revolution.
This book is titled “Disabling Intelligences” for many reasons. First, because so-called “AI” is built off of historical projects committed to the excision of disability from the classification of humanity. Second, because technochauvinism has created the conditions of disablement for many. And finally, I have named this book “Disabling Intelligences” because the concept of intelligence is inextricable from the heart of eugenics and must be dismantled as a socially constructed, metrically derived, and algorithmically upheld category of oppression.

It’s been six months since ICE captured Alma Bowman, a disabled immigrant who already spent thirty months in ICE custody during the first Trump regime.
On March 26th, 2025 she arrived at her immigration check in with her lawyers.
She was taken into custody and has been held ever since.
Alma is the daughter of a Navy veteran who’s lived in the US for nearly 50 years.
She has a valid claim to citizenship which is currently before the courts.
She was following all the rules, so why is she back in custody?
Retaliation.
When she was released the first time she worked as a whistle blower to help close down the Irwin Detention facility.
She exposed atrocities such as forced sterilization and various abuses of women in custody.
She fought tirelessly for immigrants and disabled people.
She fought to improve the conditions in these camps.
She’s paying dearly for it and deserves whistleblower protection.

Trump once again teasing the "big autism announcement" like it's sports or reality tv.
What's even worse is that he casually says "if it's wrong, it's wrong".
Lives mean nothing to this man.
Especially the lives of autistic and disabled people.

Virtually all #children receive these shots for free. The #FederalGovernment legally requires most #insurance to cover the roughly 30 different shots for kids, without a co-pay. Today Trump sat behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office and said:
“I think we’re gonna have something very very big coming up soon on autism. Autism is totally out of control”
I find it deeply disconcerting the way they keep “teasing” the big info they have on autism.
If there was a real scientific breakthrough, they wouldn’t wait.
It’s also not “out of control”.
This isn’t about science, it’s about discriminating against neurodivergent people.
It’s eugenics.
The outcome of that re-do was to change the insurance coverage of the #MMRV #vaccine for #LowIncome #children. On Thursday, the panel ended with a split vote: MMRV shots were not recommended, but they would be paid for by the government. Friday's re-do vote made it all align — not recommended, not allowed to be paid for.

Rather than get mired in the thought-terminating arguments around political parties or political factions, though, I think we'd do well to reflect on what sorts of other ways of thinking feed into this one: the measured life; standardized testing; the internet of things (sensors); tracking apps of various kinds; electronic health records; data science as a profession and Big Data generally; predictive modeling; generative AI and other optimization-oriented or productivity-promising technology. All of these function to render life as an object of knowledge in one way or another. All of them trace their origins through eugenics and the patterns of thought that led to it, and all of them threaten to enable and enhance further eugenic thinking. This is not to say these things are always all bad; this is meant to be a reflection on what exactly they're for.
Why read the number of steps your FitBit told you you took today, unless there were some sense in which you want your future self to be better than your present self? It's not an accident that this is called "physical fitness", "fitness" being the Darwinian concept describing which organisms should survive. Why subject children to standardized testing unless there were some belief it made them better students? To what end tends to be left out. Why adopt a technology meant to improve productivity, unless you're of the belief that improvement (optimization) were even possible?
Generally speaking, if one is able to bring oneself to believe that a human being is made better by a data-informed technical intervention, isn't one playing the same game as these anti-autism anti-vaxxers, just with different terminology? If your answer to this provocation is that your data is better than theirs or that you're more aligned with reality than they are--some variation of "the science is on our side"--you've ceded the territory: this is more of the same optimization logic that brought us to this point to begin with. I think we have no choice but to do better than this.
That's my reflection anyway.

There's a nearly straight line from 20th century eugenics to 21st century big data and data science. Google, the bastion of big data, was founded by two Stanford graduate students; Stanford was founded by a eugenicist and instituted eugenics principles. Francis Galton--inventor of the regression analysis that forms the backbone of data science--was "hot or notting" London with a counter hidden in his pocket long before Harvard-age Zuckerberg recuperated the same with the favorite quantification technology of our day, computers.
"The measured life" is a eugenics concept. All these doohickeys that collect data with the promise of making your body a bit more "fit"? Eugenicist in origin. Eugenics is about "optimizing" the physical "fitness" of people. Apps that help you learn, make you more mentally "fit"? Also have origins in eugenics. Eugenics is also about "optimizing" the mental "fitness" of people. Hence the obsession with IQ.
This isn't to say you shouldn't take care of your body and mind in whichever ways you want. I do think it's important, though, to periodically reflect on, and ask yourself hard questions about, what's driving those efforts and what the goals really are. Part of understanding why eugenics thinking is resurging so hard and fast in the US is understanding its roots, where that type of thinking comes from. It's also important to reflect on where the apps and devices you use to achieve these goals come from. How many come directly or indirectly from Stanford, which was built by eugenicists to achieve eugenic goals, and its offshoots?
Trump and Musk are literally repeating themes from Francis Galton's eugenics out in the open now. They're confident they can get away with it without pushback because the ground was laid long ago. But eugenics didn't suddenly become bad again because coarse people started saying the quiet part out loud. It's always been bad thinking, bad science, and bad morality.

It's a short step from "extinction"/"unsuccessful" ("low fitness") to "elimination". The latter word is what is meant. The passive voice/inevitability framing purposely obscures the agency of the literal, nameable human beings who are attempting to bring this reality into existence. "Embrace #AI or we will do our best to eliminate your profession, your livelihood, and you" is more precise and brings out the hostility of the threat these corporate statements attempt to hide.
This dehumanizing and ultimately eugenic idea frequently hides in plain sight like this. Sometimes evolutionary or genetic language and metaphors are used. Don't accept it. These folks may try to create this reality but that doesn't mean they'll succeed and it doesn't mean we need to surrender and let them succeed.
