I need to push back on this one. Trump and Miller sending their goon squads to is no “Ha ha they're old and stupid” joke. Yes, Maine is overwhelmingly white—but Lewiston, one of the two cities on alert, has a famously significant Somali community. In recent years it has been a source of occasional and usually positive media attention. The Magas are well aware of this, a model of neighborly grace that they are eager to punish and destroy.

A macro shot of my Mandarin Lights Azalea shows a branch and bud encased in ice. The clarity of the ice accentuates the vivid colors of the branch and bud trapped inside, contrasting against a soft, defocused background. This beauty sits dormant for now, but soon will explode into a beautiful red flower bringing with it the bees and butterflies. Shot taken after the spring ice storm in Maine. 3/24/24

                                                                                                1. Report the collision immediately to law enforcement
                                                                                                2. Wait for an officer to arrive at the scene
                                                                                                3. Request a certificate of ownership or permit
                                                                                                4. Take the entire carcass with you (field dressing on the roadside is not allowed)

You cannot legally possess any wildlife in Maine, living or dead, without proper authorization. Ignoring the permit process could result in a $500 minimum fine if you’re caught with an unpermitted animal.

The law requires you to take the whole carcass if you decide to keep it. This prevents people from butchering animals on public roads. Once you have the animal and your permit, you can take it to a professional processor who can prepare the meat properly.

Some cities also maintain roadkill call lists. You can add your name and receive calls when fresh roadkill becomes available in your area.

What Animals Can You Salvage in Maine

Maine law allows you to keep roadkill from specific animals involved in vehicle collisions. You can salvage deer, moose, bear, and wild turkey after hitting them with your car.

These four species are the only wild animals you can legally claim as roadkill in Maine. The state treats them differently than other wildlife because they are classified as big-game animals.

                                                                                                Animals You Can Keep:

                                                                                                • Deer
                                                                                                • Moose
                                                                                                • Bear
                                                                                                • Wild turkey

You cannot keep other wild animals or wild birds you accidentally hit. This includes smaller mammals like raccoons, foxes, or coyotes. Most wild birds are also off-limits.

Many bird species fall under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which is a federal law that protects them. This means you could face federal charges for possessing these birds, even if you found them dead on the road. The federal protection applies to hundreds of species including ducks, geese, and songbirds.

Maine requires you to report any collision with deer, moose, bear, or wild turkey to a law enforcement officer right away. The officer will inspect your vehicle for damage. If they confirm the collision caused damage, they give you a certificate that lets you take the entire carcass.

You must take the whole animal. Maine law prohibits removing just parts of the carcass from the accident scene. Breaking this rule can result in fines between $100 and $500.

Penalties for Illegal Roadkill Possession in Maine

If you take roadkill home without following proper procedures, you could face serious consequences. Possessing wildlife without a permit carries a minimum fine of $500 in Maine.

This penalty applies to all wildlife species regulated by the state. You need a permit whether the animal is alive or dead.

The law is particularly strict for big-game animals. These include deer, moose, bear, and turkey. Taking any of these animals without getting the required permit from a law enforcement officer puts you at risk of receiving a citation.

                                                                                                Why Maine Enforces These Rules:

You cannot claim any roadkill without reporting it first. Law enforcement must issue you a permit before you take the animal.

The permit requirement helps wildlife officials monitor how many animals die on roads each year. This data affects future hunting regulations in specific areas.

                                                                                                Animals You Cannot Keep:

                                                                                                • Lynx
                                                                                                • Owls and other birds of prey
                                                                                                • Threatened or endangered species
                                                                                                • Federally regulated waterfowl

Getting caught with these protected animals leads to additional federal violations. The penalties increase significantly beyond the state minimum fine.

Your best approach is always to call law enforcement immediately after hitting an animal. Any officer can issue the permit on the spot. This simple step keeps you legal and helps Maine track important wildlife data.

Spread the love for animals! 🐾

Where they throw trash at our yard and yell the f-slur as they drive by. Where they open the gate for our dog to escape and vandalize our vehicles. Where other things happen that I can't say because it would betray the privacy of others.

Across Maine, local bike/ped committees, planning commissions, non-profits, and volunteers are working hard to improve safe, enjoyable, and practical active and options. But we aren’t always talking to one another! In these virtual monthly meetings, we hope we can learn from each other’s successes and challenges, get advice, and share resources in a casual setting – a forum for those already active in the bike/ped world, as well as for those who are curious about the current work being done or who want to start their own local conversations. Meetings recur every third Monday of the month at 4 PM via Zoom (FMI at link below). Meetings will be ~45 minutes and will consist of introductions, share outs, and time for questions! I’ll be there to facilitate and help connect folks with resources."

Maine’s coastal breezes, inland winters, and short, capricious growing season make plant selection a critical decision. Choosing varieties bred or selected for cold tolerance can extend harvest windows, stabilize yields, reduce losses, and simplify season-extension tactics. This article explains why cold-hardiness matters in Maine, how it affects different crops, and what practical steps gardeners can take to maximize success.

Different vegetables respond to cold in different ways. Here are practical examples with general guidance – always check local extension resources and seed catalogs for specific varieties tested for northern climates.

                                                                                                                  - Brassicas: Kale, collards, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and kohlrabi. Many kales (e.g., ‘Winterbor’, ‘Red Russian’) can tolerate light snow and multiple freezes. Brussels sprouts and cabbage often become sweeter after frost.
                                                                                                                  - Leafy greens: Spinach, arugula, mache, and winter lettuces. Spinach and mache are among the first greens to go in the ground and can survive early spring and late fall frosts.
                                                                                                                  - Root crops: Carrots, beets, parsnips, rutabagas, and turnips. Par-snips and rutabagas can remain in the ground under a mulch and be harvested in late winter.
                                                                                                                  - Alliums and bulbs: Garlic planted in the fall overwinters and produces robust bulbs the next year. Certain onion varieties are cold-hardy as sets.
                                                                                                                  - Peas: Early peas (sugar snap, shelling) tolerate cool soil and can be planted as soon as the soil is workable.
                                                                                                                  - Potatoes: Early varieties planted in cool soil will tolerate light frosts to foliage until tuber set; new potatoes are often harvested before fall freezes.

Cold-hardy varieties multiply the effectiveness of season-extension methods. Combining variety choice with modest infrastructure yields big returns.

                                                                                                                  - Row covers and low tunnels: Lightweight fabric raised over hoops provides 2-8degF of protection and can be used to extend harvests and harden transplants.
                                                                                                                  - Cold frames and cloches: Simple cold frames capture solar warmth and protect seedlings during cold snaps.
                                                                                                                  - Mulches and snow as insulation: Straw or leaf mulch protects overwintering roots and garlic. In some years snow acts as a natural insulator for winter-killed plants vs. exposed soil.
                                                                                                                  - Raised beds and black plastic: Raised beds warm earlier in spring; dark surfaces absorb heat and reduce frost risk in micro-sites.
                                                                                                                  - Succession planting and relay cropping: Using short-season, cold-hardy varieties in succession ensures continuous harvests despite weather variability."

Another beautiful morning at Marginal Way in Ogunquit, Maine. I was out very early taking pictures with a friend. We arrived about 45 minutes before sunrise and walked up the Marginal Way from Perkins Cove. We scoped out a great spot (there are no bad spots) and enjoyed a beautiful sunrise, despite the mosquitos.

Graham Platner, the alleged progressive running for U.S. Senate in Maine, thinks a three-day waiting period for gun purchases is excessive, and he does not support an automatic weapons ban. I'd love to see Susan Collins lose, but there's no way I can vote for this guy. Maine Democrats need to find a better candidate, and fast.

“As a firearms owner and someone who's bought a lot of guns in the state of Maine, I do think the three-day waiting period is a bit excessive. That being said, it was passed by this legislature. It was passed by people representing the people of Maine, and I certainly don't have a problem with it if the people of Maine want to go that route,” Platner said in the interview.

Unlike Congressman Jared Golden, who announced after the Lewiston tragedy was carried out with a semi-automatic rifle, that he would support an assault weapons ban, Platner would not because they tend to focus more “on aesthetics than function.”

“I am currently not for an assault weapons ban, certainly in the form that they have been put forward. As someone who has spent a lifetime around firearms, a lifetime, frankly, around automatic weapons when I was in the Marine Corps, in the Army, and semi-automatic weapons in the years afterwards as a firearms instructor and working for the State Department, I often see some of these bans as being written with language that is not really indicative of how these guns work. I very much would like to see language in legislation that reflects how firearms function and would maybe get us the outcomes we want,” Platner said. “So, I am not opposed down the road to some kind of legislation that's going to restrict access to certain kinds of firearms, but I do want to make sure that that is being written with, frankly, reality and the way that these firearms work.”
