Commemorating ECOSOC at 80: Accelerating Progress on the SDGs
The October 2025 edition of the ECOSOC Newsletter highlights the start of the Council’s 2025–2026 session, held under the theme “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs for a sustainable future for all.” Marking ECOSOC’s 80th anniversary, the session is led by its new President, H.E. Mr. Lok Bahadur Thapa, Permanent Representative of Nepal, alongside four Vice-Presidents from Algeria, Armenia, the Dominican Republic, and Spain. Together, they will lead the Council’s work across its diverse segments and forums.
The President has identified five key priorities for the session: Transforming food systems, advancing digital inclusion and youth entrepreneurship, scaling up climate action, mobilizing financing for development, and commemorating ECOSOC at 80 by reaffirming the Council’s central role in global cooperation. These priorities will guide the efforts towards the 2026 High-level Political Forum, which will review SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11 and 17. The Newsletter also provides updates on upcoming meetings in October, November, and December, as well as reflections on past events, including the 2025 High-level Political Forum and High-level Segment.
