Mathematics 314 Carrousel 3:: Itinerary 5 (Revised March 1999)

This document provides a guide for teachers to follow for Itinerary 5 of the Mathematics Carrousel 3 textbook. It outlines the objectives covered, which involve solving problems related to the area or volume of certain solids. It allocates 13% of the school year to cover this itinerary and provides recommendations on which textbook activities and exercises teachers should prioritize or make optional. It also notes corrections to formulas and suggests ways to use other included materials like daily warm-ups.

Carrousel 3: Itinerary 5
(Revised March 1999)

Introduction
This document is a tool designed to help give teachers a clear description of what should be
covered in Itinerary 5 of the Mathematics Carrousel 3 textbook. The textbook offers more
material than can be covered in most regular classes. However, this summary should be
seen as a guide only; the amount of time available as well as the students' interests and
capabilities will determine the materiel which is covered. Further information about the
material is found in the Teacher's Guide.

Objectives Covered in Itinerary 5

This itinerary covers Objective 2.4: To solve problems related to the area or volume of certain
solids. Students will be able to establish the relationships between the dimensions of a
solid (including decomposable solids) and its area or volume in order to solve problems.
They will also be able to use the appropriate units of measure.
It is important to refer to the MEQ Curriculum document for more details on the
objectives of the program (pp. 32 - 33).

Time 13% of the year.

Comments
1. The benefits derived from using manipulatives such as the power solids or
student-made solids to develop the formulas cannot be overemphasized.
2. Note: The formulas given for the volume of a pyramid and a cone on page 48 are
incorrect. They should read: V (pyramid) = (A b • h) and V (cone) = (A b • h)
3 3
3. The questions from the Calculab could be divided up and used as daily 5-minute
class warm-ups.
4. Test questions in the Teacher's Guide should be edited to reflect what is
pertinent to the objectives of the program and thus what is valued.
