Lab Safety Handout

There is NOTHING that anyone else can do

that will keep you safe if you are not an alert
guardian of your own safety.
Being smart is NOT enough.
The equipment in this lab has been designed or
selected with safety in mind. But that does not
eliminate all risks.
Guidelines:
Appropriate dress
Full shoes or boots - no sandals
Long pants or dress - no shorts or short skirts

Appropriate behavior
Avoid startling, surprising, or disruptive behavior.
If you are aware of something that you think is unsafe say something!
For instance:
bare electrical wires
unsafe behavior of others
trip or slip hazards
chemical hazards
suspicious smells
If needed, say something to the TA or professor.

At the start of each lab

Be aggressive in knowing the risks and safety issues.
Ask, if not told.
Know where the MSDS sheets are, if applicable.
Know the number for emergencies.
