1. What are choppers? Explain its principle of operation. Also explain its control strategies.
2. Explain Buck/Boost Chopper.
3. What are Cycloconverters? Explain its basic principle of operation.
4. Explain single phase to single phase step down bridge Cycloconverter with
inductive load for both continuous and discontinuous load current. Draw all relevant
waveforms.
5. A chopper circuit is operating on TRC principle at a frequency of 1 kHz on a 220 V d.c.
supply. If the load voltage is 180 V, calculate the conducting and blocking period of
thyristor chopper in each cycle.
(Ans: Ton = 0.82 s, Toff = 0.18 s)
6. An ideal type A chopper is supplying a resistive load of R a = 10 , with its voltage
source of 230 V. When the chopper switch remains closed, the drop of voltage is 2 V. The
chopper frequency is 1000 Hz, = 0.5. Calculate

7. A step up chopper has input voltage of 220 V and output voltage is 600 V. If the non
conducting time of thyristor chopper is 90 s, compute the pulse width of output voltage.
In case the pulse width is halved for constant frequency operation, find the new output
voltage,
( Ans: 155.43 s, 321.91 V)
