Equivalent Expressions
Expressions are equivalent if they have the same value
You can determine if expressions are equivalent by
reducing them all to their simplest form
Is 2(-6x + 3) + 4x equivalent to any of the expressions
below?
a. -10x + 6 + 2x
b. 3(-4x +2) + 4x
2(-6x + 3) + 4x = -8x + 6
a. -10x + 6 + 2x= -8x + 6
b. 3(-4x +2) + 4x = -8x + 6
They are all equivalent expressions
Which expression is equal to 2(4x 16)?
a. 8x 30
b. 4x 32
c. 8x 32
d. x 32
Explain your reasoning.
2(4x 16) = 2(4x) 2(16) = 8x 32
Choice c
Practice writing equivalent expressions for the following
expressions:
1. 4(3 + 2y) 4y
2. -5x + 3(x + 12y) + -16
3. (4b 6) + (12 + 8b)
Which expression is not equivalent to 24x 15?
a. 6(4x - 3) + 3 6(4(2) 3) + 3 = 33
b. 3(5 + 8x) 3(5 + 8(2)) = 45
c. -2(-12x + 7) 1 -2(-12(2) + 7) 1 = 33
You can determine if expressions are equivalent by
substituting values in for the variable (x)
x = 2
24x 15
24(2) 15
48 15 = 33
Substituting with Expressions
You can determine if expressions are equivalent by
substituting values in for the variables
Is 2(x + 4) equivalent to (8x + 12)?
Substitute x = 1
2((1) + 4) = 2(5) = 10
(8(1) + 12)= (20) = 5
They are not equivalent
Which expression(s) are not equivalent to -6x +12y:
a. -6(x 2y) -6(2 6) = 24
b. -3(2x 4y) -3(4 12) = 24
c. 2(-3x + 6y) 2(-6 + 18) = 24
d. (-12x + 24y) (-24 + 72) = -24
e. -6(x + 2y) -6(2 + 6) = -48
You can determine if expressions are equivalent by
substituting values in for the variables
x = 2, y = 3
-6(2) +12(3) = -12 + 36 = 24
