Syllabus

This document provides an overview of an online course covering cloud computing, big data, and content delivery networks (CDNs). The course consists of three modules that cover cloud computing concepts like IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS, big data concepts like Hadoop and MapReduce, and CDN procedures and models. The goal is for students to understand how these technologies work together to deliver services to devices. The course includes video lectures, in-video questions, quizzes for each module, and recommended supplemental readings. Students must complete all activities and score 60% or higher on each module's quizzes to receive a verified certificate.

Course Description
You have most likely heard about Clouds and Big Data before, and already know how
signi cantly important they are and will be in the future.

Cloud Computing enables us to easily use software as well as processing platforms and
computing infrastructure (that are not equipped on our computers and smartphones)
from any location through Internet services. Big Data provides us with new intelligence
from massive data sets, which can help in situation/condition/status analysis and decision
making. In addition, CDN is the best technology to provide information/contents to
Internet users in the quickest and most e cient way. Therefore, the
information/software/database/contents from Clouds and Big Data centers can be very
e ectively supported by CDNs. This is why these lectures are combined together in this
course.

Prerequisites: None

Course Goals and Objectives

Upon completion, with the knowledge of this specialization, you will be able to discuss at
an expert level with engineers and business professionals on the topics of cloud computing
(including SaaS, PaaS, IaaS), big data (including Hadoop, MapReduce, HDFS), and CDN
(including hierarchical content delivery models) and how they can work together to provide
services to our smartphones, laptops, PCs, and TVs.

Course Materials
The reading lists provided for each topic are recommended but not required. The lecture

Elements of This Course

The course is comprised of the following elements:

Lecture Videos. In each module your instructor will teach you the concepts you need to
know through a collection of short video lectures.

In-Video Questions. Each lecture has questions associated with it to help verify your
understanding of the topics. These questions will automatically appear while watching the
lecture videos. These questions do not contribute toward your final score in the class.

Quizzes. Each module has Quizzes. The Quizzes aim to help you review and recall the
content of a section in the module. You may take the Quizzes as many times as you want
and all questions have feedback to help you understand the topic better.

Readings. There are supplemental readings for every module. The reading lists provided for
each topic are recommended but not required. In addition, each lecture provides a reference
list at the end, which are recommended reading material if you want to learn more details
about the subject.

How to Pass This Course

I am continually trying to improve this course and may encounter some issues requiring
me to make changes. As technology advances very fast, the course contents will need to be
updated. I appreciate your input and ask that you have patience as I make adjustments to
this course.

To qualify for a Veri ed Certi cate, simply start verifying your coursework at the beginning
of the course. If you are not sure you should take this course, I was informed that Coursera
allows one to delay payment until he/she is con dent of passing. If you choose not to verify
your work, you can still participate in the complete course.

The breakdown for what is required in order to pass this class and qualify for a Veri ed
Certi cate is as follows. All lectures must be studied and you must participate and pass all
required activities in order to pass this course. The passing grade for all quizzes and
capstone project (on a 100 point scale) is 60 points or higher for each individual module.

You can get/give help via the following means:

Use the Learner Help Center to find information regarding specific technical problems. For
example, technical problems would include error messages, difficulty submitting
assignments, or problems with video playback. If you cannot find an answer in the
documentation, you can also report your problem to the Coursera staff by clicking on the
‘Contact Us!’ link available on each topic's page within the Learner Help Center.
