2nd Grade Life Cycle Exploration

This lesson plan allows 2nd grade students to track the life cycles of butterflies, hummingbirds, or robins using the online platform JourneyNorth. Students will research their chosen organism, observe local sightings, and post their findings. They will analyze migration patterns and develop hypotheses about organism behavior. Students will then create an original project, such as an informative pamphlet or picture book, demonstrating their understanding of the life cycle, and publish it online. The lesson incorporates collaboration, student-centered learning, higher-order thinking, and publishing original work.

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity

in your classroom:

I would use JourneyNorth to have my students track the life of a Butterfly, Hummingbird or Robin.
JourneyNorth allows users to see maps where organisms have been spotted. It also provides a ton of
articles with information on the specific organism. I would incorporate this website into our study of
life cycles of different living organisms. Students will be able to pick which organism they would like
to follow. They will research their organism under the news section of JourneyNorth. Students will
also go observe in their communities to see if they can find their organism. If they do spot their
organism in their community, they will post under the sightings section of the site. They will look the
maps provided on the site and look for common patterns. They will also look for common places for
sightings of their organism. Students will use this information to create a project of their choice:
informative pamphlet, video about their organism, picture book describing the life cycle, create a big
map that shows the track marks of organisms and where they are located/migrate to. Students will
publish their original work on the class blog.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?

Students need either a computer, iPhone, iPad, or a device that can access the internet.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them
may not be addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond
their school: Students will work collaboratively with peers that chose the same organism that
they did. They will all work together to track their organisms. They will collaborate with others
beyond their school when they add their sightings of organisms.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing
original products as a result of engaging in a project): Students will be creating their own
projects displaying and depicting the life cycle of their organism.

c. Higher-order thinking: Students will use higher-order thinking when researching the sightings
of their organisms. They will create a hypothesis and possible explanation as to why the
organisms behave the way they do.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product:
Students will publish their sightings on the website. They will also be creating projects that will
be published on the class blog.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson benefits all learners because they are able to read, see pictures, watch videos, create
content and more. The pictures and maps are helpful for English Learners. Students will be using the
internet to conduct research and will create their own original publishing.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies:

Students will use JourneyNorth to track their organisms over a period of time. They will collaborate
with one another to create a project of their choice. Students will take notes over time and research
their organisms by using the resources the website provides.

Students will follow internet safety policies and use caution when working and publishing online.
They will not share personal information like last names, location, school names, etc. The blog where
the students post their original work will be password protected.

Reflective Practice:
This lesson will benefit students in many ways. It gives them the opportunity to create an original
product, conduct research and work collaboratively with others. They will use the information and
research to create an original product of their choice. This lesson is very engaging for students
because of the use of technology and the choice of projects.
