K and R= 0.287 kJ/kg K.
2.A gas of mass 1.5 kg undergoes a quasi-static expansion, which follows a relationship p=a+bV,
where ‘a’ and ‘b’ are constants. The initial and final pressures are 1000 kPa and 200 kPa respectively and the
corresponding volumes are 0.2 m3 and 1.2 m3 . The specific internal energy of the gas is given by the relation U =
(1.5pV – 85) kJ/kg, where p is in kPa and V is in m3. Calculate the net heat transfer and the maximum internal
energy of the gas attained during expansion.
3.Two tanks A and B are connected through a pipe with valve in between. Initially valve is closed ; tanks A and B
contain 0.6 kg of air at 90°C, 1 bar and 1 kg of air at 45°C, 2 bar respectively. Subsequently valve is opened and air is
allowed to mix until equilibrium. Considering the complete system to be insulated determine the final temperature,
final pressure and entropy change.
4.Determine the heat transfer and its direction for a system in which a perfect gas having molecular weight of 16 is
compressed from 101.3 kPa,20ºC to a pressure of 600 kPa following the law PV1.3= constant. Take specific heat at
constant pressure of gas as 1.7 kJ/kgK.
5.Three grams of nitrogen gas at 6atm and 160c in a frictionless piston cylinder device is expanded adiabatically to
double its initial volume then compressed at constant pressure to initial volume and then compressed again at
constant volume to its initial state .calculate the net work done on the gas. Draw the p-v diagram for the processes.
6. Discuss the following steady flow engineering devices with SFEE equations (a)Nozzle and diffusers (b)Compressor

1. A heat engine is used to drive a heat pump. The heat transfer from the heat engine and from the heat pump is
used to heat the water circulating through the radiators of building. The efficiency of the heat engine is 27% and
COP of the heat pump is 4. (i) Draw the heat diagram of the arrangement and (ii) evaluate the ratio of heat transfer
to the circulating water to the heat transfer to the heat engine.
2.Two kg of air at 500kPa, 80°C expands adiabatically in a closed system until its volume is doubled and its
temperature becomes equal to that of the surroundings which is at 100kPa and 5°C. For this process, determine 1)
the maximum work 2)
the change in a availability and 3) The irreversibility. Take, Cv = 0.718 KJ/kg K, R = 0.287 KJ/kg K.
3.Air in a closed vessel of fixed volume 0.15 m3 exerts pressure of 12 bar at 250 °C. If the vessel is cooled so that the
pressure falls to 3.5 bar, determine the final pressure, heat transfer and change of entropy.
4.Two reversible heat engines A and B are arranged in series. A rejecting heat directly to B. engine receive 200 kJ at
a temperature of 421°c from a hot source while engine B is in communication with a cold sink at a temperature of
4.4°c if the work output of A is twice that of B, find.1. The intermediate temperature b/w (A) & (B), 2.The efficiency
of
each engine, and 3.The heat rejected to the cold sink.
5.Describe the the carnot cycle and examine the carnot principle, idealized carnot heat engines, refreration and
heat pump
6. Prove Carnot theorem
