3.3 Mix Design: 3.3.1 Mix Design Procedure

The document outlines the step-by-step mix design procedure for producing M25 concrete with 0% replacement of recycled fine aggregates. It involves: 1) Setting a target mean strength of 31.6 N/mm2. 2) Selecting a water-cement ratio of 0.45. 3) Calculating cement, water, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate contents. 4) Verifying minimum cement and water-cement ratios are met. The final mix proportions are: Cement - 392 kg/m3, Fine aggregates - 869 kg/m3, Coarse aggregates - 999 kg/m3, Water - 177 kg/m3, Super

3 MIX DESIGN:

3.3.1 MIX DESIGN PROCEDURE:

The design mix for M25 concrete zero replacement of recycled fine aggregates is as
follows:

STEP 1: Target strength for mix proportioning

AS PER IS 10262:2019

ft = fck + 1.65S

Where, ft = Target mean strength

fck = characteristics compressive strength

S = Standard deviation

S = 4.0 N/mm² (table 2)

ft = 25 + (1.64 x 4)

= 31.6 N/mm²

STEP 2: Selection of water cement ratio

From table 5: IS 456:2000, maximum water cement ratio = 0.5

Adopted water cement ratio = 0.45

0.45 < 0.5

Hence adaptable.

STEP 3: Selection of Water content:

From table 4: of IS 10262:2019 for nominal maximum size of 10mm aggregates,

Water content = 208kg

For 100 mm slump add 6%,

Water content = 208 + 12.48 = 220.48 kg/m³

For using super plasticizer water reduction 20% of calculated water content = 44.1

Therefore, water content = 177 kg/m³

STEP 4: Calculation of cement content

w/c = 0.45

C = 176/0.45

C = 392 kg/m³

Minimum cement content from table 5 of IS 456:2000 for concrete type “RCC” and
exposure condition type “moderate” is 300kg/m³

392 kg/m³ > 300kg/m³

Hence adaptable.

STEP 5: Proportion of volume of fine and coarse aggregates:

According to Table 10

Volume of coarse aggregates per unit volume of total aggregates = 0.56

I.e. for 12.5mm size and zone II passing

For water cement ratio 0.45 (add) = 0.01

For every +/- 0.05 of water cement ratio -/+ 0.01% of volume of coarse aggregates

Coarse aggregates = 0.56 -0.03 = 0.53

Fine aggregates = 1-0.53 = 0.47

STEP 6: Mix calculation (per unit volume)

a) Volume of concrete =1m³

Volume of content = mass of content / specific gravity x 1000

b) Volume of cement = 392 / (3.15x1000)

= 0.124m³

c) Volume of water = 176 / (1x 1000)

= 0.176 m³

d) Mass of chemical admixture

0.35% of total cement = (0.35 x 392) / (100 x 1000 x 1.08)

= 0.00127 m³

e) Volume of total coarse aggregates

and fine aggregates = a – (b+c+d)

= 1- (0.124 + 0.176 + 0.00127)

= 0.698 m³

Mass of aggregates = e x volume of aggregates x specific gravity x 1000

Mass of coarse aggregates = 0.698 x 0.53 x 2.7 x 1000

= 999 kg

Mass of fine aggregates = 0.698 x 0.47 x 2.65 x 1000

= 869 kg

Therefore the Mix proportions for M25 are

Cement = 392 kg/m3

Fine aggregates = 869 kg/m3

Coarse aggregates = 999 kg/m3

Water = 177 kg/m3

Master glenium (Super plasticizers) = 1.27 kg/m3
