1. What is the data privacy scandal involving the most widely used social media platform
all about?
The scandal is all about the most widely used social media platform which is Facebook.
The Facebook data privacy scandal focuses on the collection of personally identifiable
information of "up to 87 million users by the political consulting and strategic
communication firm Cambridge Analytica.
2. How does this Facebook privacy scandal relate to Heidegger’s notion of revealing of
modern technology as challenging forth?
The Facebook privacy scandal is related to Heidegger’s notion of revealing the modern
technology as challenging forth because as Facebook improperly shared the personal
data of 87 million users, this gave rise to concerns about privacy and human rights of
the users of Facebook.
3. How are Facebook users “enframed’ in this particular data privacy scandal?
People who use Facebook entrusts the company their personal data. They believed that
these information will remain private and that these information will not be leaked.
There are a lot of Facebook users who are affected by the issue since it raises privacy
concerns to these said users. Other companies have had access of the users’ personal
information and these information were used to curate the kind of ads that will appear
on the user’s news feed. This results to people worrying about their privacy’s state.
4. How do you think can Facebook be used in a way that is more consistent with
Heidegger’s idea of poeisis or bringing forth of technology?
Facebook is a platform wherein people can connect to other people with the use of the
internet. It is an easy way of communication, hence, sharing of important news is less of
a hassle now that this kind of technology is present. Facebook also has a feature
wherein the users will be able to communicate to other users using video chat. This
gives them the opportunity of face to face communication even at a long distance.
5. How can the Heideggerian notion of ‘questioning’ guide Facebook users toward a
truthful use of social media?
The Heideggerian notion of questioning may guide Facebook users toward a truthful use
of social media by making them question the technology itself. They would be
questioning what the true essence of technology is. They would be able to evaluate
what the original goal was then contemplate on its pros and cons. Whit the
Heideggerian notion of questioning, users will be able to evaluate whether or not their
use of the technology is ethical, or if it is towards a good goal.
