Samalkha Group of Institutions Btech Final Semester Major Project

This document is a major project proposal submitted by two aeronautical engineering students at Samalkha Group of Institutions on introducing electric aviation in India. The students - Daman Madan and Gourav Uppal - submitted the project proposal to their head of department, Mr. Shuvenra Mohan. The abstract summarizes that the battery technology available today is sufficient to power scheduled regional flights on routes currently operated by Dash 8 aircraft in India and that hybrid electric aircraft could provide more flexibility and meet energy reserve requirements for commercial operations, positioning India well to pioneer this field.

Abstract
This study concludes that new aircraft with electric propulsion are suitable for regional flight
routes in INDIA.
The battery technology of today is sufficiently capable to store electric power for scheduled
flights to the more than 20 short destinations/routes operated by Dash 8 aircraft today.
The first commercial electric aircraft are expected to be hybrid electric in order to provide
more flexibility and accommodate the mandatory energy reserve for such commercial
operations.
India is well-positioned to be a pioneer in this nascent field because of the availability of
renewable hydropower and a well-structured network of short field airports owned by
GMR. The government subsidy program (PSO) is one of several instruments that can be
structured to encourage operation of electric aircraft.
