Pioneers of editing
Before video was even a thing a man called Eadweard Muybridge
created the first motion picture he placed 15 cameras along side a
horse track he then spliced these images together to created the
affect of a moving image

When we talk about the history of editing we have to mention a


man called Georges melies. Who after seeing a movie by the
lumiere brothers decided to buy his own animatograph machine.
Then one day when he was out shooting he was filming a bus but
his machine jammed and when it was fixed the bus had moved and
a car was there. And when he watched what he had filmed the bus
turned into the car. Creating the very first jump cut.

After finding this out he started using it straight away. He also


introduced editing tricks such as the fade out/ fad in, overlapping
and stop motion photography.

Another man who made editing what it is was Edwin s porter he


use parallel actions to tell a story. This gives the audience many
different views. He used this well in movies like the great train
robbery and life of American fireman.

D W Griffith he would cut from varying shot types to show different


levels of enthuse e.g. dissolves to show passing of time.

Then over across the water Russia was developing the art of film
making with Russian montage editing. One man in particular Lev
Kuleshow created an effect called the Kuleshov effect. This mean
that if you cut from shot a to b they will have more meaning than
they would’ve than if they were used separately. (Hitchcock would
later do his own version of this)
In America around the golden age of Hollywood editing was seen as
a woman’s job and because of this Hollywood developed strict
rules for the editors to follow. These rules would include 180
degree rule.

But as technology improved people started to see editing as an art


form and people would learn all the skills the editors before them
such as jump cut, dissolve, fade in/out, cut wipe, morph, washout,
and many more.

One man in modern editing is Walter Murch who has worked on


movies Julia, apocalypse now, Godfather part 3 and cold mountain
He specially known for his ability to cut with emotion and rhythm
he also uses eye trace very well that’s how he controls the viewers
eye.
