Understanding Issues Related To Factual Programming1

1. Accuracy is the most important aspect of factual programming as information must be a faithful representation of the truth to inform and educate viewers. 2. Factual programs must also maintain balance by showing all points of view fairly without leaning toward one side to allow audiences to form their own opinions. 3. Impartiality and objectivity require that all sides of an argument or story are treated equally and facts are presented without bias so viewers can assess the evidence themselves. Subjectivity involving personal opinions is generally avoided.

Understanding issues relating to factual programming

for television.
Accuracy.
Accuracy is when the information is a faithful representation of the
truth. This makes it one of the most important things in factual
programing as it is being shown to many people. it is usually used to
inform or educate people for example the news. The news gives viewers
the facts and statistics from all over and it must be accurate.
Balance
Balance is when showing a factual program, the producers must show
all points of view so that it is fair. They cannot be seen to lean towards
one point of view they would need to keep balance between both sides
of the story. The point of factual programming (the news) is to give the
audience balanced facts and statistics while not being biased so they
can make their own opinion.
Impartiality
This basically means that all sides of the story/Argument are treated
fairly and equal this means news stations can't show any of their own
opinion. A good example of this is politics even though lots of people
have different opinions when it comes to politics the news/news
presenter must stay impartial to their own opinions.
Objectivity
Objectivity is when using evidence and facts to show the whole truth. A
presenter must show both sides of the argument, so they are not
biased. Basically, Objectivity is stalling your judgment's while looking at
all the facts.
Subjectivity
Subjectivity is the term given to your opinion you make whilst discussing
a certain topic and is basically the opposite of objectively.it would
normally be avoided during factual TV programming. But some
presenters may do it to give their opinion, but it is important that they
mention that it's their opinion.
Opinion.
This is a judgement people will form due to their views and pass
experiences. Some talk show will gather opinions from the public to get
a wider perspective on different topics.an example of this would be
“this morning”
Bias
it is important that the producer looks at different opinions, views and
facts and focuses equally on both concepts. This is difficult not to be
biased when you feel your argument is right. It is vital that factual
programmes stick only to correct information and don’t make
statements that support one side of the argument and not the other.
Representation
This is showing how something is being portrayed or being stereotyped
you would have to be careful not to stereotype anybody during a
factual program as it could offend your audience. An example of this is
how the media represent teenagers in hoodies suggesting they are bad
for society.
Privacy
Everyone has the right to privacy they do not have involve themselves in
any recordings or statements. This would mean you cannot publish
them without permission. In some cases, disciplinary action may be
taken if the right guidelines are not followed.
Contract with viewer
The contract with the viewer is basically an unwritten rule that means
if you state your show is factual and then describe what your show is
about you have made a pact with your viewers to supply them with
the information you said you would as well as it being precise,
accurate and interesting.
