The division of Pathology at Regional Cancer Centre started functioning in 1982 as a
small Cytology lab.Later in 1985 Histopathology and Haematology was started. The Division was
named Division of Pathology in 2005 and over the last few years the division has grown
enormously in terms of the patient load, services and facilities for diagnosis offered.
Pathology Division is one of the vital supportive facilities of RCC. This is done mainly
through the 3 sections of the Division – Surgical Pathology, Haematopathology and
Cytopathology .In addition to the routine diagnostic services, this Division is providing
specialized diagnostic services of Immunohistochemistry (IHC),Frozen Section reporting ,Flow
Cytometry, FISH and Molecular tests which are at present available only in very few centers in
the state. Immunohistochemistry is an elaborate delicate technique demanding extra skill and
it is very useful in specific diagnosis of problem cases. We have established state of the art
‘Molecular Pathology laboratory and Flow Cytometry reporting facility (to subtype Leukemias
and Lymphomas). FISH (Fluorescent in Situ Hybridisation) facility to study cytogenetic
abnormalities.
Faculty of Pathology Division is also providing expert opinions on referred tissue
samples from various Hospitals all over the state and also adjacent states.

programmes of the State, primarily by providing the Pap smear test facility, for early detection
of uterine cervical, oral and breast cancers. The Academic staff of the Division is also playing a
major role in the applied research activities of the Centre, by getting involved in various
Research projects and guiding PhD students.
