m7 Lesson

This document describes a student response and assessment tool (SRT) activity for a 1st grade math lesson on addition and subtraction word problems. The activity will use Quizziz, an online quiz platform, for students to complete math questions individually on computers or tablets. Data from the activity will be used to identify topics students struggled with and differentiate future instruction accordingly. The goal is to further student understanding of math concepts through an engaging online activity while also gathering formative assessment data.

Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Let’s Practice Our Skills!

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 1st Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSE1.OA.1- Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding
to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using
objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Technology Standard Addressed:

ISTE Standards- 1 & 7

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☒ Other: Quizziz

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the start of this SRT activity, the students and I will have reviewed all the concepts of this standard.
The students would have already been introduced to these problem types through prior lessons, so the SRT
activity will be used to further their understandings of these problems. The SRT activity will be introduced to
the students through a YouTube video explaining what Quizziz is, and how the SRT operates. Students will
also complete a quick intro Quizziz before they complete the actual math lesson Quizziz I created.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
SBooker, 2020
Student Response and Assessment Tools
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☒ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

The students will each complete the SRT on their own computer or tablet. Students will open up the Quizziz
on their devices, and I will guide them through completing the Quizziz. While students are answering the
questions on their own anonymously and with no partners, no student can move ahead or work ahead of the
group; they will have to go question by question and be on pace with the rest of the class. I will be standing at
the front of the class, and the Quizziz will be on the board. I will read each question thoroughly , out loud to
the students to make sure they really understand what is being asked. I will be sure to highlight any key
vocabulary terms embedded in the questions to help guide student thinking. Students will be provided with
the computers or tablets, a white board, a dry erase marker and eraser, and any necessary manipulatives
(such as counters or number rods). The activity will take about 15-20 minutes to complete.
Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☒ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
Yes. This activity will be completed by the students anonymously. Students will be able to see the right
answers after the SRT is completed. This is so that those who got the question wrong will be able to see what
the right answer is again, and I will explain why that answer was the correct choice.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity is over, I will review the data provided to me by Quizziz. I will see which students
struggled with the questions and which students did not struggle with the questions. I can gather this data
and use it to help guide my instructional plans for each student.
How will the data be used?
The data I collect from this activity will include student averages from the Quizziz, which questions were the
most commonly missed, how my students feel about each question from the polls I assigned, the average
time each student spent on a question, and any questions that were not attempted by a student. I can use
this data to guide my instructional plans for students, and to see what concepts most students need more
help with and focus on those. This data can also be used by any staff that helps students who have an IEP or a
504 plan, such as a special education teacher. I will not award a grade for this activity; it will just be a
completion grade. My goal for this activity is to help further the student’s understandings, and to gather
valuable information on where my students are at individually. I can share this information with parents as
well to help guide student instruction at home. The only aggregate, anonymous data I will share with the class
SBooker, 2020

is which questions were the most missed, and which questions had the most correct answers. This is so
students can see what we need to work on more, and what the class has mastered as a whole group. I will
definitely use data to differentiate my instruction. I will do this by giving students who struggled a lot with the
Quizziz more feedback throughout a lesson, and I will provide them with more supplemental support. I will
also use this data to differentiate my levels of work I assign. For example, one student might need more help
with missing number equations, but another student might be ready to work on 3-digit addition.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

I have never created a Quizziz before, and my goal is that it really helps students further understand these
concepts while staying engaged. I hope to learn how my students feel about each problem type, and which
students need more assistance and practice. I hope it will help students learn to use this fun online tool, while
still furthering their understanding of math concepts.

Reflective Practice:
I feel that this SRT lesson will have a great impact on student learning. The lesson introduces students to a
new and exciting interactive tool that they can use to learn about concepts from class. The lesson also helps
students to better understand the math topic that they were learning about, which will help them excel with
this topic. I think using this Quizziz along with a BPT, such as PowerPoint, could really enhance the lesson and
help to further the student learning and understanding even more.
