Student Response

This document describes a lesson plan that uses the Socrative student response tool to assess kindergarten students' understanding of adding and subtracting within 10. The lesson plan involves a group discussion on the topic, examples worked through together, and then an individual online quiz using Socrative. The purpose of the quiz is to formatively assess students' knowledge and identify areas needing more practice. The teacher will provide immediate feedback and use the results to differentiate instruction or target reteaching as needed.

Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Adding and Subtracting within 10

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten
Content Standard Addressed: MGSEK.OA.2 Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and
subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.

Technology Standard Addressed: Computational Thinker

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☐ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

By using Socrative, students do not have to be present in class in order to complete the quiz. This tools allows
students to use computers, tablets, smartphones, etc. which does not hinder them from the learning
experience.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity, the class will start in a group discussion. The teacher will guide the students into the
topic of adding and subtracting within 10. Students will receive many different exercises prior to the quiz to
allow them to become familiar with adding and subtracting. The teacher will begin the lesson reading a book
regarding adding and subtracting. While she is reading, engage the students in the learning experience. For
example, if the story has a problem where someone gives candy away, the students will be asked how much
candy is left? This will help strength the students’ knowledge of adding and subtracting.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

Once the large group discussion is complete, students will have access to computers in order to complete the
online quiz. Students will be directed to the Socrative site and join the class with a code provided by the

teacher. As students begin the quiz, the teacher will allow each student enough time to answer the questions.
This activity should be about 15-20 minutes long, depending on how long it takes the students to answer the
questions.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☐ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
This quiz is designed to test students about what was previously learned. It is not a final exam or a major test.
It will help me get an understanding as to if the students are grasping the information, and if more time is
needed to discuss adding and subtracting.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT activity, there will be a continuation of the lesson. There will be a fun math game that engages
students with hands on activities for adding and subtracting.
How will the data be used?
This activity allows the teacher to see how many questions are correct and were missed. By the feedback
given through Socrative, the teacher is able to make any connections and revisit the lesson where students
may need more practice. The information collected will be for the use of the teacher. As stated before, the
quiz will be used to get an understanding if the students are grasping the information given. After the
submissions, the teacher will view what questions were mostly missed and discuss with the entire class. Also
to help further students in the math content area, the teacher could use the results to break students into
addition and subtraction groups, based on the questions missed on the quiz.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

This is my first lesson using a student response tool. My hopes are the students will respond well to the way
in which the tool is set up. I hope the students will learn the standard and are able to test their knowledge
using Socrative.
Reflective Practice:
This activity could be used multiple times to determine whether students are understanding the material.
Socrative can be used as a pre-assesment, quiz, test, final, practice work, etc. For this particular lesson, the
activity is used to quiz students on previous knowledge learned in class. The quiz could be adjusted with
fewer questions to allow students to practice. To further the enhance this project, students could play
educational math games, such as ABC Ya to practice addition and subtraction problems.
