Vertical angle theorem- Is a proven conjecture -
Vertical angles are congruent, if.. 1 and 2 are congruent and 3 and 4 are
congruent
Example 1:
Given- <1 and <2 are vertical angles
Prove- < 1 is congruent to <2
Input- Output-
<1 and <2 are vertical angles <1,<2,<3 vertical angles
<3 and we have a diagram <1 is congruent to <2
A proof- Is a convincing argument that uses deductive reasoning.
Two-column proof- In which the statements and reasons are aligned.
In columns- Is one way to organize and present proof.
Statements: Reasons:
1. <1 And < 2 are vertical angles 1. Given
2. m<1 + m< 3=180 2. Supplementary angles
m<1 + m< 3= 180 3. Transitive property of equality
3. m<1 +m< 3= M< 2+ m< 3 4. Subtraction property of
4. m<1 = m<2 equality
5. <1 is congruent <2 5. By definition of congruent
angles.
Vertical angle theorem ex.
72=5x +2- 70=5x- x=14 ( remember that x is just a value)
Congruent supplement theorem- If two angles are supplementary
to congruent angles then they are congruent.
If.. m<1 +m<2 = 180 and m< 3 + m< 2= 180 then.. < 1 is congruent to < 3.
Given: <1 and <2 are supplementary < 2 and , 3 are supplementary.
Prove: < 1 is congruent to < 3.
Statements: Reasons:
1. <1 and < 2 are supp. <2 and 1. Given
< 3 are supp. 2. Definiton of supp.
2. m<1 +m < 2= 180, m<2 + m< 3. Transitive property of equality
3= 180 4. Subtraction property of
3. m<1 + m< 2 = m, 2 + m< 3 equality
4. m< 1= m< 3 5. Definition of congruent
5. < 1 is congruent to < 3. angles.
If.. m< 1 + m< 2= 90 and m< 3 + m< 2 = 90 then.. <1 is congruent to < 3.
Theorem- All right angles are congruent- true
Right angles =90 degrees
If ... then… < a is congruent to < b.
-If two angles are congruent and supplementary then each is a right angle.
If … < 1 is congruent to < 2 and m< 2 =180 then < 1 and < 2 are right
angles.
Linear pair theorem- The sum of the measures of a linear pair is 180.
If.. < 1 and < 2 form a line or pair then.. m< 1 + m< 2 = 180
Given: m< 1= m< 2, m< 1= 105
Prove: m < 3= 75
