Hydraulic Conductivity Calculations

01. Calculate the hydraulic conductivity for a constant head test with given data on head difference, area, water collected, and specimen length. 02. Estimate the hydraulic conductivity of sand at a void ratio of 0.7 given its conductivity at a void ratio of 0.5 is 0.022 cm/sec. 03. Determine the quantity of water in m3/min that flows into a ditch for a sand layer of given length, cross-sectional area, and hydraulic conductivity.

CEG 6905 Homework 1 Due Fri Jan 25nd 2017

Name:_ Show All Work

01. Calculate the hydraulic

conductivity (cm/sec) for the
constant head test shown on the
figure with the given data:
• L = 457 mm
• A = area of specimen = 22.6
cm2
• Constant head difference = 711
mm
• Water collected in 3 min =
353.6 cm3

02. The hydraulic conductivity of a sand at void ratio of 0.5 is 0.022 cm/sec. Estimate its
hydraulic conductivity at a void ratio of 0.7.

03. A sand layer of the cross section shown in the figure has been determined to exist for a
800 m length of the levee. The hydraulic conductivity of the sand layer is 2.8 m/day.
Determine the quantity of water which flows into the ditch in m3/min.
04. A layered soil is shown on the figure. Estimate
the ratio of equivalent hydraulic conductivity
kx(eq)/ky(eq).
