Summary 2:
Modern Computer Architecture is highly dependent on high throughput computing (HTC) systems
for innovation research & run several simulated configurations for accurate results. Small and
medium level research group’s remains lack to modern research resources due to limited funds as
this modern research required additional hardware cost. For enhancing the computer architecture
research and education, a community-based computing resource developed named Archer and
deployed at several universities of United States. Archer system includes latest technologies for
visualization and a set of cluster resources which can access each new user who joined Archer
with server or desktop contribute according to its capability. Archer provides self-configuring
system that a user with no experience can install on their resource with in half hour and can access
the surveys and virtual networks. Archer also allow to access simulation modules which consists
of scripts, program codes, sets of different input & output data that is useful for creation of
reproducible simulations.
Archer provides continuous access to addition of resources by the community that an individual
unable to do so even after weeks. Archer’s deployment can be visualized and replicated at small
level within the institution also at large level with multiple institutions. Archer also enable the
new users to access of resources that are hosted remotely. Researchers depends more on designing
the simulations before implemented it on hardware as the cost increases by changing in design
parameters for desired output results.
As per requirements of researchers Archer provided an integrated access to high performance
resources of computer architecture. Three frictional examples are given below to better understand
how exceptional capabilities empowered by archer.
1. A Graduate level student at Florida University preparing a design which she further
submitted to a conference. The design having a simulation each required 12 hours to
complete on her system. The total run time for this experiment on her system will approx.
80 days. She uses an Archer instantiates appliance, copy the Linux simulator binary to VM,
building on a tutorial (Condor) 160 job files created and Queued. Although the utilization
of Archer resources on other jobs are 75% but still her simulations finished within a day.
2. A group of students at Northeastern University developed a set of local resources, the
scripts of resources do not provide load balancing they contact with Archer and by using
Virtual Machine appliances set up a condor pool. Which was available and easily reached
out by other Archer users.
3. A joint collaboration of students using Archer Wiki at Cornell University & Northwest
University ends up with publish the paper of their experiments. Both students start
development by using SESC software onto Archer appliances. One student build,
implement and tested new features with the help of simulator available with virtual
machine (VM), creates scripts and share these condor scripts linked from the Archer Wiki.
On the other hand, second student at Northwest University uses these shared codes and

Archer system builds on virtual & autonomic techniques that leads to ease of management. The
design makes it possible to manage decentralized resources at centralized level. PlanetLab is an
example of this. Middleware used in Archers are easy to install, integrates the system, Middle ware
consist of self-configured VMs along with virtual networks (VNs) to form accessible community
pools of virtual resources. Every resource in Archer is a Virtual appliance installed with Linux
operating system. Virtual Machines technology getting matured as Archer appliances can easily
be installed by a new user within 30 minutes. Archer appliances can also run binary software like
SESC, Simics & PTLsim. Virtual Machines technology improved rapidly in last decay and its
performance is par as compared with non-virtualized Machines/Systems. The software of
virtualization is now available with all x86 Intel processors & AMD processors.
Condor developed 20 years back and now it is used widely used in all around the Globe for
managing a big number of jobs at the same time. Condor provide monitoring and supervision of
workflow. Currently condor deployed 01 lac computers in 1400 condor pools. Local condor pools
managing jobs by local users of any site and access to their resources and other external Archer
resources through grouping, and make it available for other users to access them remotely.
Appliances used in Archer are protected if any undesirable behavior occurred in a virtual Machine
it shut down easily and can start again by its user. Archer provides bidirectional connectivity through
Input Output (IPOP) to the appliances and no need of any configuration for institutions use.
Isolation provided by Archer to the users through virtual Machines & networks along with condor.
The external user only access to virtual machine of Archer through condor. Hosts for Archer are
authenticated and traffic of the system is end-to-end encrypted using a security stack in every
virtual machine public key cryptography. Security patches are applied time to time on VMs, The
upgradation of VMs are done using UnionFS stacked file system. After the upgradation
completion, user data remain unmodified as it stored in different stacks.
An experiment is done for testing the performance & capabilities of the middleware and Archer
software in relation with computer architecture research and education. A prototype Archer is
deployed and 200 jobs submitted from a laptop running the virtual appliance with a broadband
network of speed 1MB/s.
Five Universities involved where this job exestuation distributed and make a pool of 56 virtual
Machines. The total execution time for these 200 jobs on these 56 VMs is 7.5 hours while the same
jobs will take 9.5 days to run on a single node. Figure 2 shows the detail of this experiment, where
number of jobs shows on Y-axis while the time in seconds shows on X-axis.
The virtualization for this VMware-based virtual Machines measured 11 percent that is
acceptable for achieving the goal using high throughput.

appropriate modularity is also discussed to save money scaling, increasing the feasibility of

maintenance, repair and disposal of products. Finally, modularity is shown in help improve system
flexibility and development through reduce the cost of changing and upgrading the system to one,
and on the other hand facilitate product innovation. In this paper, they use a value-based approach
that has been proposed to overcome deficiencies traditional approach and assessment of design
flexibility Alternative.
With this approach, the focus shifts from value-based perspective requirements where the designer
compares the present value of the system with others alternative design for life. The system value
can be including sources of costs and revenues and options (real) value flexibility through
modularity, scalability and evolution. This framework is based on the systemic architecture
spectrum covers a variety of modular / distributed architecture in Indonesia complex system and

instability. The reason for the increased possibility of instability is that distributed architecture
requires complex task coordination schemes to allocate resources when searching for uncertain
ones and there are often many ways to share resources multiple feedback between components in
the system with high modularity (i.e., statically distributed). In addition, the possibility of
instability in systems with even higher modularity (i.e., dynamically distributed) is increasing
which components are independent, and what are their goals? It does not have to target the entire
system. Four M + operations are defined in the framework, which represents the transition from
one level of modularity to the next. Changes needed in the system architecture and improvement
of the level of modularity to determine optimal modularity, we must determine and compare
system values before operating with the system value afterward. Such an assessment requires
knowledge of the system and its environment. The value of the system at each level of modularity
can be calculated using one of the standard methods for estimating systems (e.g., scenario analysis,
discounted cash flow analysis) and must consider the parameters of the technical, economic and
life cycle. It should be noted that the solution in the proposed framework is based on the overall
economic value that a modular architecture can add to the system by increasing the response to
environmental uncertainty. Therefore, the framework can be used to evaluate technically feasible
design alternatives by considering factors such as physical limitations or performance
requirements. The proposed model can complement context-sensitive deterministic approaches to
decision making for modular architecture. We apply this approach to the simplified case of space
systems and compare the value of the differences between the two architectures as a function of
uncertainty in different systems and environmental parameters such as cost, reliability and
technological obsolescence of different subsystems and the distribution of subsystems between
factions. They use VaR, a measure of risk of value loss that is commonly used, to achieve
stakeholder risk thresholds. A stochastic model of the solution under uncertainty, to find an
architecture that optimally responds to uncertainty in the environment.
