Lab Report ME1

This document provides an introduction and overview of a mechanical engineering workshop lab. It contains 3 sections - an introduction, observations of the machines and tools in the lab, and a layout of the lab space. The key machines observed include 3 lathe machines, 1 shaper machine, 1 universal milling machine, 1 floor stand drill machine, and 1 floor stand tool grinder. Common tools used include hand tools, semi-precision tools, and precision tools. The lab aims to familiarize students with workshop machinery and manufacturing processes through hands-on experience.

Introduction to mechanical workshop, tools and machines.

Introduction:
Objectives:
 To observe the mechanical lab
 To familiarize with the machines present in the lab
 To draw the layout of the lab

Theory:
Engineering workshop:
It is a place where machining operations are performed. Machining is a manufacturing process in
which the raw material is processed by removing unwanted material with the help of machinery.
The main purpose of engineering workshop lab is to impart the basic know-how of various tools
and their applications in different sections of manufacturing industry. This workshop is also
helpful in acquiring skills involved in safe use of engineering workshop machines and
equipments, and to gain the fundamental knowledge of common manufacturing processes. This
lab also helps in understanding the complexity of the industrial job, along with time management
and skills requirements of the job.
Mechanical workshop requires machine work; following are the machines that are commonly
used.
Machine name Quantity
Lathe machine 3
Shaper machine 1
Universal milling machine 1
Floor stand drill Machine 1
Floor stand tool grinder 1
Apart from machines, mechanical workshop also uses tool aid. Tools can be:
1. Non precision/ bench hand tools
2. Semi precision tools
3. Precision tools

Observations:
After a full tour of the mechanical workshop, the following observations were made for
machines and tools.
Machines:
Lathe machine:
Lathe is a machine that performs various operations on the work-piece such as cutting, sanding,
knurling, drilling, deformation, facing and turning.
Lathe is used for woodturning, metalworking, metal spinning, thermal spraying, parts
reclamation and glass work. It is also used to shape pottery.

Shaper machine:
This machine is used to flat out metal surfaces especially where a large amount of metal has to
be removed. A disc rotates the top of the machine moves forward and backward, pushing a
cutting tool. The cutting tool removes metal from work which is carefully bolted down.

Universal milling machine:

Milling machine uses a milling cutter to remove material from the surface of a work-piece. The
milling cutter is a rotary cutting tool, often with multiple cutting points. The cutter is usually
moved in perpendicular direction so that cutting occurs on the circumference of cutter.

Floor stand drill machine:

It is a fixed style of drill that is bolted on the floor. It consists of a drill head usually driven by an
induction motor/ for wood cutting process, speed of motor is changed by shifting belt over the
pulleys.

Floor stand tool grinder:

Tool grinder is used to sharpen milling cutter and tool bits along with a host of other cutting
tools. It can perform variety of grinding operations: surface, cylindrical and complex shapes.
