REPORTED SPEECH

…WHAT SOMEONE SAID

• When we report someone's words we can do it
in two ways.
• We can use direct speech with quotation marks
(“I work in a bank”)
• or we can use reported speech ( he said he
worked in a bank) without quotations.
• We use the past of say: SAID
• Or the past of tell: TOLD
Tell vs Say
• Tell + Object
• Say is not followed by an object

• Example: Ryan to Anthony: “ Don’t swim in this pool.”

• Ryan told Anthony not to swim in that pool.
• Ryan said Anthony not to swim in that pool.

• Abrianna to Sonia ” I don’t have any money.”

• Abrianna said she didn’t have any money.
• Abrianna told she didn’t have any money.
Look at this example:
Maria: “I live in
Peru.” Maria said ( that)
she lived in Peru.
