Grade 7 Set Theory Learning Plan

This document outlines a two-week unit plan on set theory for 7th grade students. It includes 5 essential questions about representing and comparing sets. Students will explore and define sets, subsets, universal sets, and the null set. They will examine Venn diagrams and set operations like union, intersection, and difference. The goal is for students to independently apply set concepts at home, school, and in their community. Students will generalize their understanding that sets can be represented in various ways and used to identify relationships and solve problems.

INSTITUTIONAL LEARNING PLAN

Unit Topic: Set Theory (2 Weeks)

Sub-Topic: Defining and Describing Sets, Subsets, Kinds of Sets, Pairs of Sets, and Set Operations

(Grade 7 - Tarsier)
(Grade 7 - Mooncat)

Content Standard:

 Demonstrates understanding of key concepts of sets and the real number system.

Performance Standard:

 Is able to formulate challenging situations involving sets and real numbers and solve these in a
variety of strategies.

Learning Competencies:

 Illustrates well-defined sets, subsets, universal sets, null set, and cardinality of sets, union and
intersection of sets and the different of two sets.

Transfer Goal:

 The students on their own and in the long run will be able to perform independently the
knowledge and skills on the concepts of set, defining and describing a sets, kinds of sets, pair of
sets, and set operations at home, in school, and in the community, and solve routine and non-
routine problems.

Essential Questions:

1. How are sets represented?

2. Are symbols important in representing ideas or concepts in mathematics?
3. How does set theory help to identify relationships and solve problems?
4. How do you compare and contrast relationships using a Venn diagram?
5. Why is the study of sets or set theory important?

Enduring Understanding:

The student will be able to understand that there are many ways of representing sets, Set operations create
relationships between sets, and Pairs of sets show different relationships that can be use in real-life
application.
