Read the text. What is special about Sandy’s house?

Coober Pedy Cave Houses

My name is Sandy and I am from Coober Pedy,
a small town in the desert of South Australia.
There are about 3,500 people in my town and
Coober Pedy is famous for its opals. Our house
is special because it isn’t a normal house, it is a
cave! About 50% of Coober Pedy’s inhabitants
have got cave houses. Why have we got a cave
house? Well, the desert is very hot in the day and it is always cool in a cave.
When it is 40°C outside, our house is always about 20°C. In fact, we haven’t got a
garden because it is too hot outside.
There is a big living room in our cave house but there aren’t any windows!
There are two sofas and an armchair in this room. There is one small window
in the kitchen and one small window in the bathroom. There isn’t a bath in our
bathroom but there is a big, spacious shower. There is a bed and a wardrobe in
my room. My sister has got a desk in her room.
My parents have got a bathroom with a bath next to opal
their bedroom. Life is great in a cave house!

Read the text about a wild animal. What animal is it?

It lives in the forests in Asia, especially in India, Nepal and

Bangladesh. It is beautiful, with an orange and white body
with black stripes. It eats meat from other animals and its only
enemy in the world is man. It is quite big and very fast. It runs
at 60 km an hour and jumps 10 metres! It weighs almost 300 kg.
Its name in the Indoeuropean language means ‘arrow’.
There are only about 3,500 of them in the world and it doesn’t generally live in groups but lives alone in its
territory. It generally has two or three babies, called ‘cubs’. It has cubs every two or three years and the cubs
stay with the mother

During those early years,
the mother teaches her

1 Read the text. What is sumo?

The Japanese sport of sumo wrestling is a modern

form of martial art but sumo has a long history and
there are many old traditions. It is a full-contact,
competition sport with two sumo competitors
(wrestlers) in a circular ring. Women can’t touch this
ring.
The sumo wrestlers are called rikishi in Japanese.
The winner of the match is the first rikishi to push the
opponent outside the ring or force him to touch the
floor with a part of his body that isn’t his feet. Each
match is about a minute but sometimes a match is
only 5 seconds. Sumo wrestlers only play one match.
All sumo wrestlers have got long hair in the samurai
style and they live together in one place.
The junior wrestlers get up very early at about 5 o’clock
in the morning and do the cleaning and prepare the
baths for the senior wrestlers. The senior wrestlers
get up at about 7 o’clock. Sumo wrestlers don’t eat
breakfast but they eat a very big lunch. After lunch they
sleep in the afternoon and then have another very big
meal and go to bed. A sumo wrestler eats about 20,000
calories a day in only two meals.
The top sumo wrestlers can earn about $ 30,000 a
month!
