EARTH DAM------------------------------TUTORIAL-2
Q.1 What are the causes of failure of earthen dam? Describe in brief.
Q.2 What do you understand by construction pore water pressure? How it is important during
the construction of an earth dam?
Q.3 What do you understand by piping in earth dam? Explain in phenomena in an earth dam?
Q.4 Derive the Laplace equation of seepage through porous media? Write down the
assumption made also?
Q.5 Write guidelines for selecting section of an Earth Dam?
Q.6 What are the Components of an Earthen Dam, describe briefly with the help of neat diagram?
Q.7 Write down the main design criteria may be laid down for the safety of an earth dam?
Q.8 What do you understand by flow net? Derive the expression of seepage through a
homogeneous earth dam?
Q.9 What do you understand by phreatic line in an earth dam? Write the Casagrande’s
graphical method of drawing phreatic line in an earth dam with horizontal filter?
Q.10 An earth dam made of homogeneous material has the following data;
(i) Coefficient of permeability of dam material = 5x10-4 cm/sec
(ii) Level of the top of the dam = 200.0 m
(iii) Level of deepest river bed =178.0m
(iv) H.F.L. of Reservoir =197.5 m
(v) Width of the top of the dam =4.5 m
(vi) Upstream slope =3:1
(vii) Downstream slope =2:1
(viii) Length of horizontal filter =25 m
Determine the phreatic line for the dam section and the discharge passing through the
dam.
Q.11 A flow net is plotted for a homogeneous earthen dam of height 22m and free board 2.0m.
The results obtained are;
(i) Number of potential drops =12
(ii) Number of flow channels =5
The dam has horizontal filter of 30m length at the downstream end and the coefficient of
permeability of the dam material is 5x10-5 cm/sec.
Calculate the discharge per m run of the dam.
Q.12 Find out the factor of safety of d/s slope of an earth dam during steady seepage, the section
of the dam was drawn to scale of 1 cm=5m and the following results obtained on a critical
slip circle:
Area of N-rectangle =19.5 sq.cm
Area of T-rectangle = 10.3 sq.cm
Area of U-rectangle = 2.2 sq.cm
Length of arc = 15.2 cm
Laboratory tests have furnished values of 250 for effective angle and 0.185 kg/cm2 for
cohesion. Unit weight of soil =1.92 g/cm3
