College Application Narrative

How could I describe myself without sports? I couldn’t. I’ve played just about everything

I could, and genuinely enjoyed sports throughout my childhood. I started by kicking around a

soccer ball at a young age, largely due to my parents being soccer players and loving the game.

Their love for soccer contributed to mine and helped me enjoy the sport. I branched out to others

along the way like baseball, basketball, and hockey. Soccer and hockey are the two that stuck

with me. I began playing hockey at seven years old, and have played ever since. Soccer began

earlier and has also stuck with me. I play travel and school soccer, and travel hockey. For me,

sports are a getaway from all outside distractions.

When I step on the field or the ice, I feel calm and focused on the game. I block out all

other problems or issues I could be having outside of these two sports. I can simply focus on my

athletic ability, and being with my friends who have a shared goal of winning. When I’m in a

game, it’s extraordinarily fun and honestly never gets old. I could play five games a day and

never get bored. I love the positions I play in for both sports. In soccer, I play center midfield

which allows me to get the best of both worlds, defending and offense. I like it this way because

it pushes me to work hard by running nonstop, and getting back on defense to help my

teammates out. For hockey, I get to move around positions often, which is awesome because I

can be a part of different situations and accomplish a different task in each one. I play wing the

most which is offense. It is critical wingers get back to help on defense as well. Apart from wing,

I play center sometimes allowing me to take faceoffs and lead the attack.

The best part of sports is the interaction I get with my teammates and coaches. As you

can guess over all these years, I have developed some incredible friendships with my teammates.

Some of my teammates are my best friends in life. Some of these relationships have lasted years

since we first became teammates. I have been extremely fortunate to be coached by amazing

people who have a deep love for the game. For soccer, I have experienced several unique

coaches, at several age groups, learned different strategies, and coaching techniques from each

one. Having multiple coaches throughout the years, and multiple coaches on a team, has done

nothing but good for me. They share their knowledge with me, give me useful pointers, and give

advice for certain situations.

I honestly wouldn’t have wanted my childhood or my teen years so far to go any other

way than it has. I have had an awesome experience with sports, been given some incredible

advice, met some awesome people, and made lifelong bonds through sports. These reasons are

why I couldn’t describe myself without sports.
