f :x x 2 + 3x + 1, x  , x  − ,
2
−x
g:x 3+ e , x .

(i) Show that f has an inverse. [1]

(ii) Give a reason why the composite function f −1g exists. Find f −1g ( x ) and state the domain of f −1g . [6]

The function h is defined as follows.

h:x ln ( x − k + 1) , x  , x  k , where k  0 .

(iii) Find the value of k such that the range of hg is given by ( ln 5, ) . [2]

3 17 − x
Answers: (ii) f −1g ( x ) = − − + e ; Df -1g = Dg = (iii) k = −1

2020 DHS P ROMO Q3

Functions f and g are defined by

f :x x 2 + cx + d , x  , where c and d are constants,

g:x ln x, x  , x  0 .

(i) Given that the composite function gf exists, find an inequality involving c and d . [2]

For the rest of the question, take c = 2, d = 4 .

(ii) Write down an expression for gf ( x ) and find exactly the range of gf . [3]

(iii) The graph of a function h is symmetrical about the line x = k if h ( x + k ) = h ( − x + k ) for all valid
values of x . Using this definition, show that the graph of gf is symmetrical about the line x = −1 . [2]

Answers: (i) 4d  c 2 (ii) gf ( x ) = ln ( x2 + 2 x + 4 ) ; R gf = ln 3, )

Topical Worksheet: Functions
2020 TMJC P ROMO Q7
The function f is defined by

f :x − ln ( x − 2) , x  , 2  x  3 .

(i) Find f −1 ( x ) and state the domain and range of f −1 . [4]

(ii) Sketch on the same diagram the graphs of y = f ( x ) , y = f −1 ( x ) and y = f −1f ( x ) , giving the equations
of any asymptotes and the exact coordinates of any points where the curves cross the x - and y -axes.
[6]

(iii) Explain why the x -coordinate of the point of intersection of the graph of y = f ( x ) and y = f −1 ( x )
satisfies the equation

x + ln ( x − 2) = 0 ,

and find the value of this x -coordinate. [2]

Answers: (i) f −1 ( x ) = 2 + e− x ; Rf −1 = Df = (2,3] (ii) Asymptotes: x = 2 , y = 2 ;

Coordinates: (3, 3) , (0, 3) , (3, 0) , (2, 2) (iii) Using GC, x = 2.12 (3 s.f)

2020 EJC P ROMO Q10

Functions f and g are defined by

f :x x3 − 7 x 2 − 5x + 11, x  , x  k ,

( x + 1) + 2 , x .
2
g:x

(i) Let k = 1 .

(a) Show that f does not have an inverse. [2]

(b) Determine whether the composite function fg exists. [2]

−1 −1
(ii) Find the value of k given that f exists and that the domain of f is x  , x  −24 . [2]
(iii) Let k = 6 .

(a) Show algebraically that f '( x)  0 for all values of x in the domain of f . [2]
(b) Solve the equation gf −1 ( x) = 83 . [3]

Answers: (i)(a) The line y = 0 cuts the graph of y = f ( x) at x = 1 and x = 7.47 , so f is not one-to-one,
f −1 does not exist. (i)(b) Since Df = [1, ), Rg  Df . So fg exists. (ii) k = 7 (iii)(b) x = f (8) = 35
