LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of this lesson, students will be able to:
Describe first aid for bleeding and wounds, shock, poisoning, burns, heat exposure, cold exposure, bone
and joint injuries, including fractures, Specific injuries (to the eyes, head, nose, ears, chest, abdomen,
and genital organs), and sudden illness (including heart attack, stroke, fainting, convulsions, and diabetic
reactions).
Identify the supplies needed to render first aid.
Define basic first aid terms.
Identify emergency situations.
Provide basic first aid for various situations based on the victim’s signs/symptoms.
Prioritize care for multiple victims based on assessment results.
Identify equipment/devices used for personal protection during first aid treatment according to OSHA
regulatory guidelines.
Demonstrate the proper techniques for rendering first aid of open and closed wounds.
Apply dressings and bandages, observing all safety precautions and using the circular, spiral, figure-
eight, and recurrent, or finger wrap.
Differentiate between the three types of bleeding.
Recognize the steps in wound care.
Identify the characteristics, symptoms, and treatment for shock.
Distinguish between the three different degrees of burns and the treatment for each.
List the procedures for responding to poisonings.
Examine the injuries resulting from extreme heat and cold.
