Chapter 1
NetBackup Self Service
Release Notes
This chapter includes the following topics:
■ About NetBackup Self Service 9.0
About NetBackup Self Service 9.0
NetBackup Self Service 9.0 empowers users to self-serve common backup and
restore requests while providing automation and control to IT.
Self Service's multi-tenant, role-based access, and dashboard features provide
visibility over what’s protected and ongoing backup usage. Self Service's request
forms put complex policy management tasks safely in the hands of users who are
not trained in the complexities of NetBackup administration.
For Enterprises
Managing backups and restores for many thousands of endpoints across multiple
locations and data centers is a task that typically requires a team of specialists.
Effecting changes to policies can be a time consuming, error prone, manual activity
that can leave vital resources unprotected.
Enabling an intuitive self-service portal reduces complexity and errors, and
automates a significant number of manual policy change activities. It also enables
non-backup specialists to carry out backup and recovery-related tasks in a controlled
and audited environment.
For Service providers
Providing backup and restore services to multiple tenants across mixed platforms
is a challenge for many service providers. Service providers can enable self-service

and automate tenant requests for backups and restores. This action puts the tenant
in control and significantly reduces provisioning costs.
NetBackup Self Service allows multiple tenants to access a tailored, self-service
portal through which requests to back up and restore infrastructure are made
intuitively. The status of their protected environments is tracked and reported.
Service providers gain from automation while ensuring strict separation and security
between tenant environments. Tenants gain control and visibility over what is
protected.
Installation
For details of how to install NetBackup Self Service, please refer to the NetBackup
Self Service 9.0 Installation Guide.
Chapter 2
New features and
enhancements
This chapter includes the following topics:
■ New features and enhancements
■ Bugs fixed
■ Upgrade from previous versions
New features and enhancements
Exclude policy from SLA
A new option is added to exclude the protected clients that have no backups from
triggering an attention alert state by the traffic light system. This option is configured
within protection policies.
This option is useful for script-based applications where the policies are created
automatically but never used, meaning that no backup is taken. The benefit of
excluding one or more unused policies is that you no longer receive the incorrect
notifications which lets you concentrate on the issues that require your attention.
VMware Cloud Director import improvement
New VMware Cloud Director 10.2 APIs are used to improve import performance.
After an update in NetBackup Self Service 8.2 MR1 to import the vSphere name,
when you import virtual machines from VMware Cloud Director, there was a
significant performance effect. This performance effect increased VM import times.
The improvement addresses the problem and uses a new API introduced in VMware
Cloud Director 10.2. The API provides the vSphere name so NetBackup Self Service
no longer needs to additionally connect to vCenter.
New features and enhancements 8
New features and enhancements
This performance improvement has an added benefit whereby all imports from
VMware Cloud Director 10.2 no longer require vCenter credentials. The credentials
are only required for VMware Cloud Director versions 9.5 to 10.1.
Veritas Smart Meter is now Veritas Usage Insights
Starting with NetBackup 9.0, Veritas Smart Meter has a new name, Veritas Usage
Insights. While some instances of Smart Meter still remain in the NetBackup Self
Service interface, the documentation reflects the new and correct name. If you
encounter the name Smart Meter in the interface, be aware this feature is referred
to as Usage Insights in the documentation.
See the Veritas Usage Insights for NetBackup Getting Started Guide for additional
information about Usage Insights.
Installation and configuration improvements
The installation and the configuration improvement provide access to the API
connection string through a new option in the installation wizard called Edit Directa
API Connection String.
This new option provides easy access through the user interface to update the API
connection details, logon credentials, and set the required authentication; the
supported authentication types and parameters are:
■ Certificate: Client certificate thumbprint, server certificate thumbprint
■ WindowsWithCredentials: User name, password
■ WindowsIntegrated: No arguments required
■ Basic: User name, password
■ Anonymous: No arguments required
For example:
authtype=Basic;url=http://localhost/DirectaTrunkPublicWebService/
DirectaApi.svc;username=username;password=password;
Replace username and password with the correct user name and password.
The Directa API connection string is pre-populated during the standard installation
or upgrade process. You can update the string either during this process or as a
configuration change in the future.
Retention Periods with end dates beyond 2038
Previous versions of NetBackup and NetBackup Self Service only supported
retention periods to the year 2038. This date was also the limit for Infinite retention.
The maximum retention period is now extended to the year 3000. This change

provides greater flexibility for users who want longevity for their backups. Further
information about this change is available in the NetBackup Release Notes.
