Heredity (Inheritance and Variation)

The document is a semi-detailed lesson plan for a 10th grade biology class focusing on mutations. The lesson plan aims to teach students about different types of mutations like substitution, deletion, and insertion and their effects. The lesson involves an activity called "Mutation Telephone" where students relay information in groups to demonstrate how mutations can alter information. Students then analyze what type of mutations occurred in their group and how it affected their performance. Finally, the lesson defines small and large scale mutations and their examples and effects on DNA, chromosomes, and genetic disorders.

SEMI-DETAILED Teaching Date April 26, 2022

Quarter Three
LESSON PLAN and Time (9:00 am – 10:00
am)

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards
The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
1. the information stored in DNA as being used to make proteins
2. how changes in a DNA molecule may cause changes in its product
3. mutations that occur in sex cells as being heritable
B. Learning Competencies/Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. list the different types of mutations
b. describe some possible effects of mutations
II. CONTENT
Heredity: Inheritance and Variation
III. LEARNING RESOURCES
A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide pages
2. Learner’s Materials pages
3. Textbook pages
4. Additional Materials from Learning Resource (LR) portal
B. Other Learning Resources
https://www.teachengineering.org/lessons/view/uoh_mutations_lesson01

IV. PROCEDURES

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Setting of Classroom Rules
4. Review on the previous discussion (DNA and RNA Structure)

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. list the different types of mutations
b. describe some possible effects of mutations

C. Activity
TITLE: Mutation Telephone
DIRECTIONS:
1. The teacher will group the students into three and will ask to form single lines.
2. Each group will be given a piece of information to relay from the first member up to last member.
3. The last member of the group will write the information on the board.
4. The group who have the lowest score will be asked what is/are possible reason/s occurred why
they weren’t able to get the right answers.

D. Analysis
The following terms are the different types of mutations with its definitions.
Substitution: The word/s is/are replaced by another term/s.
Deletion : There are missing words.
Insertion : New word/s or information is added.
Guide questions:
1. Based on the given terms above, what type of mutation/s is/are present during your activity?
2. What is the effect of this/these mutation/s to the performance of your group?

E. Abstraction
A mutation is a change in the base sequence of DNA. Mutations can be categorized into two general
categories: small scale and large scale mutations. Small scale mutations affect the DNA molecular
level while large scale mutations affect the entire chromosome.

Small scale mutations are:

Substitution: a nucleotide is replaced with a different nucleotide.
Deletion: removal of a nucleotide.
Insertion: addition of a nucleotide.

While large scale mutations are:

Deletion: the loss of one or more gene(s) from the parent chromosome.
Duplication: addition of one or more gene(s)
Inversion: complete reversal of one or more gene(s)
Insertion: involves multiple chromosomes
Translocation: involves multiple non-homologous chromosomes.

Changes that affect the structure of chromosomes can cause problems with growth, development,
and function of the body’s systems. These changes can disrupt the proteins made from these genes
while some changes can cause variety of genetic disorders.

F. Application
You notice a sign in parking structure says “Warning: This area contains chemicals known to the
state of Philippines to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm”. How can these
harmful chemicals affect your DNA?

G. Evaluation
Direction: Look at carefully each figure and identify what type of mutation it describes/represents.
Choose your answer inside the box (2 pts. each)
Deletion Inversion Insertion
Duplication Translocation Substitution

1. 2. 3.

4. 5.
H. Assignment
Research and choose a syndrome caused by a mutation (such as extra or missing chromosomes) and
write a brief, 3-5 sentence paragraph on it. Make sure they mention the specific mutation to the
chromosome that leads to the syndrome and what effects that mutation causes.
