5E Lesson Plan
Teacher: Marian Alvarado
Date: May 25, 2022
Subject/Grade level: Science/ Grade 4
Materials needed:
● -Laptop, Powerpoint Presentation, Youtube,
● Soil samples from 3 uniquely different sites:
-Sand
-Clay, and
- Loam
● Garden trowel/spoon or plastic spoon
● flowerpot or any pots available
● water
Content standard:
Students often think that soils are uniform in composition and that all soils are the same (soil
is “dirt”). The goal is to further press for students’ prior understandings in a deeper level with
regards to different types of soil and composition of soil
Performance Standard:
Classifies soils based on their composition (e.g. sand, clay, organic material)
Instructional Goal/Objectives:
At the end of the lessons, the students should be able to;
a.Identify man’s uses of soil;
b. understand the complex nature of soil (components of different layers, and the creatures
living in the soil)
c. see different types of soil including sandy soil, clay soil, and loamy soil.
Different Strategies to meet diverse learner needs:
Show a picture of soil, and ask questions to elicit students' diverse ideas before the lesson.
ENGAGEMENT:
Present a video presentation of the lesson, Let the students observe in the video the three
kinds of soil, and have students examine the texture of the soil by dampening a small handful
of soil and rubbing it between fingers. (Bring out the materials). Share their observations in
class
EXPLORATION:
Show students videos on how man’s uses of soil(for example, Sandy soil can be a great
aggregate for concrete. Clay soil is used in making pottery. Loam soil is suitable for growing
most plant varieties. Ask them to describe the texture when it is wet, whether
silt/loose/warm/light or sticky/when you touch it.
EXPLANATION:
Soil is the loose surface material that covers most land. It consists of inorganic particles and
organic matter. Soil provides the structural support to plants used in agriculture and is also
their source of water and nutrients. Soil provides nutrients, water, oxygen and heat to natural
land areas. Understanding the ability and capacity of soil to support an ecosystem that plays a
big important role in land management
ELABORATION:
Materials of each student are three kinds of soil, sand, clay, and loamy soil/water, and a
Garden trowel, or spoon, or plastic spoon available in your house, and pots available(such as
flower pots or plastic cups).
1. Provide each student with three kinds of soil, sandy soil, clay soil, loamy soil, water, pots, a
spoon, and any rags that can be covered with dirt.
2. Ask students to start the experiments and place the three kinds of moderate soil in each
different pot. And see what happens when you fill it with water (just a few drops of water is
enough to see the changes)
3. Compare the relative effects of each soil with the same amount of water and what has
changed and how you feel when you touch it wet, try to compare when it is still dry and when
it becomes wet.
4. Just give the students enough time to explore, analyze and observe the relationships
between soil color, and texture, after that let them clean their respective areas.
5. Convene students and let them open their audio and share in class what they have
discovered.
Guide questions for discussion.
a.What are the three kinds of soil?
b.How man’s use of soil?
c.Are all soils the same?
d.What type of soil do you think is good for crops?
EVALUATION:
1. Instruct the students to Draw the soil profile: Have individual students draw colored soil
profiles of the three (which refer to the activity) soils, including living organisms. All
components should be labeled.
2. Let students discuss in class what is the best for crops.
