Fluid Mechanics
1. Briefly explain the application of model laws.
2. Derived an expression for flow between two parallel plates when one plate is
moving and
other at rest.
3. A 10 cm diameter pipe has a nozzle at its end. If the velocity in the pipe is 2.5 m/s
and pressure 50kPa, calculate the velocity, the diameter of the jet and head loss in
the jet the jet is discharged into atmosphere and the coefficient of velocity in the jet
can be taken as 0.98.

1. Differentiate between theoretical discharge and actual discharge for a
venturimeter.
2. What is an orifice? How are the orifices classified? Derive an expression for

3. An oil of viscosity 8P and specific gravity 1.2 flows through a horizontal pipe 80
mm diameter. If the pressure drop in 100 m length of pipe is 1500 kN/m*2 determine.
(i) The rate of flow of oil in liters per meter.
(ii) The maximum velocity.
(iii) The total frictional drag over 100 m length of pipe.
(iv) The power required to maintain the flow.
(v) The velocity gradient at the wall.

1. Calculate the pressure gradient along the flow of oil of viscosity 0.02 Ns/m 2
flowing between two stationary parallel plates 1 m wide maintained 10mm apart. The
velocity midway between the plates is 2 m/s.
2. A fluid of viscosity 0.08 Ns/m2 and specific weight 8829 N/m*3,density 900 kg/m3
flow at the rate of 5.4 x 10* (-3) m*3/sec. through a horizontal circular pipe of diameter
120mm and length 150 m.
(a) find the average and maximum velocity.
(b) Pressure difference in 150 m length in

3. A single column vertical manometer is connected to a pipe containing oil of specific
gravity
0.9. The area of the reservoir is 80times the area of manometer tube. The reservoir
contains mercury of specific gravity 13.6. The level of mercury in the reservoir is are
height of 300 mm below the centre of pipe and difference of mercury levels in the
reservoir and the right limb
is 500 mm. Find the pressure in the pipe.

3. The right limb of a simple U-tube manometer containing mercury is open to the
atmosphere while the left limb is connected to a pipe in which a fluid of specific
gravity 0.7 is flowing. The centre of the pipe is 15 cm below the level of mercury in
the right limb. Find the
pressure of fluid in the pipe if the difference of mercury level in the two limbs is 25 cm.

reading is 400 mm, find the difference of pressures.

between inlet throats of a venturimeter placed with its axis horizontal in a pipeline.
Calculate the
difference in pressure between inlet and throat when the manometer reading is
250mm and water flows through the pipeline.
