Tesla is committed to operating as a world-class innovative leader, and to support that

commitment, suppliers are chosen based on their operating excellence and
methodologies. We frequently evaluate our suppliers and thoroughly look forward to
doing continued business with those who have Tesla’s best interests in mind.

As a business partner, your feedback is extremely valued and we encourage you to share
your input on all areas covered in this and any other documents, or in any other aspects
of our business. Site visits to Tesla are also encouraged and you should at all times feel
free to provide feedback, whether minor or major.

Section 2 Document Purpose & Structure

The document includes requirements for container labels and pallet labels on shipments
of prototypes, pre-production parts, and production parts from suppliers to Tesla, Inc.
facilities worldwide.

This and all pertaining documents should be read as soon as physically possible, to ensure
a clear understanding for all who are involved of their responsibilities. Several documents
are referenced throughout this document and may be found on the Supplier Portal, or as
otherwise noted, if controlled by Tesla. Documents that are not controlled by Tesla, such
as industry standards, must be obtained separately from an appropriate organization.

This document is best viewed digitally to make use of internal links; individuals using a
hard copy are responsible for ensuring that they are using the latest revision. Any future
revisions become effective upon issuance to the supplier.

Section 4 Shipping Label Content

4.1 Types of Labels Used
Four types of shipping labels are specified for use when shipping material to a Tesla
facility:

4.1.1 3S Content Label

3S Content Label shall be affixed to all containers (boxes, cartons, bins, bags, etc.) within
a pallet of materials or as a stand-alone shipping item. The Content Label is independent
of the Receiving Label. It can be printed in advance. It only includes part related
information, which indicates what material is placed in the container. It is not used for
receiving - no PO and shipment information are included. The Label has a white
background color.

4.1.2 6J Receiving Label

6J Receiving Label for Homogeneous Load Pallet (same part number) shall be affixed to
all four (4) sides of all the pallets carrying the same parts (identical part numbers). The
human readable portion of the label has black background color.

4.1.3 5J Receiving Label

5J Receiving Label for Mixed Load Pallet (mixed part numbers) shall be affixed to all four
(4) sides all pallets with multiple packs carrying different parts; shall be used in
conjunction with the 1J Receiving Label for the individual container. The human readable
portion of the label has black background color.

4.1.4 1J Receiving Label

1J Receiving Label for Loose Box (Single box that can be hand carried) or Individual Box
under Mixed Load Pallet shall be affixed to one (1) side of all loose boxes or individual
boxes under mixed load pallet. Not required for boxes under homogeneous load pallet.
The human readable portion of the label has black background color.

4.2 Data Identifiers

Data encoded into Quick Response Codes (QR codes) used for Tesla shipping labels and
packing slips shall conform to AIAG publication “Trading Partner Labels Implementation
Guidelines,” which refers to ANSI standard MH10.8.2 (dated 2006). Data identifiers used
must conform exactly to these standards.

4.3 Lot Codes

Individual containers shall contain parts with only one lot code if the part is lot-tracked.
One exception to this standard is acknowledged – steel blanks with mixed mill sheets.
Approval from a Tesla representative from the Supplier Industrialization Engineering (SIE)
team is required for other exceptions.

Alphanumeric Content Label ID shall be encoded in QR Code Version 2 and ECC Level Q
and ONLY required on Content Label (see the label sample attached on Section 5.4).

Figure 4.4 provides an example Content Label ID. Use uppercase Latin letters A-Z and
Arabic numbers 0-9 as Content Label components. DO NOT change the length and the
order of the data components. Content Label sequences shall be generated by the
supplier and shall have the following elements:

• 2-digit data identifier 3S standing for unique container identification

• 3-digit Tesla assigned 3-digit supplier build site code
• 6-digit quantity per box (add zeros before the quantity, for example, 000050 for a
quantity of 50)
• 3-digit alphanumeric serial number that is not repeated for any box for the same
part number, supplier code, and date
• 3-digit date index starting from 1/1/2017. For example, 1/1/2017 is 000 and
1/31/2017 is 00U. This is the date when Content Label is printed or the parts
manufacturing date. Refer to the file 3 digit date in base 36 annexed.
• 10-digit Tesla part number removing dash “-.” For example, use 123456700A for
Tesla part number 1234567-00-A; use 0001234567 for Tesla part number 1234567

Section 5 Shipping Label Format

5.1 General Label Format Requirements
All shipping labels affixed to materials that are shipped to a Tesla facility must meet the
following criteria:
• Label stock must be adequate for industrial use, suitable for printing the labels,
moisture resistant, durable to resist damage and debris during shipping, and remain
readable at the point of receiving. See examples a) and b) below:
a) Non-Compliant: The use of office bond paper to print the labels.
b) Compliant: The use of self-adhesive industrial label stock.
• Label stock must be 4 inches by 6 inches (10.16 cm by 15.24 cm)
• Label must be configured to fill the full area 100% without excessive white space.
• Labels shall be printed in black and white (unless an approved deviation)
• Fonts used should be bold Arial, Helvetica Condensed, or an equivalent
• All numeric figures shall be rounded to the nearest whole number
• Units of weight shall accompany all printed weights (lbs or kgs)
• Adhesive should allow the label to remain affixed to a container or other material
without wrinkling
• Labels shall not be wrinkled or folded when placed on the material
• Shrink wrap must be flat vertical and not wrinkle when placing the labels, to avoid
wrinkles on the labels.
• Labels attached to reusable containers should be easy to remove and should not leave
behind any residue.
• Remove the old labels from returnable containers before applying new ones.
• License plates on the physical labels must match the ones in the ASN
• Packaging features like bands/straps must not cover the pallet receiving labels.

5.2 Print Quality Requirements

All text, dividers and QR codes printed on shipping labels used for shipments to and
between Tesla facilities must meet the following criteria:
• Avoid pixelated or blurry QR Codes and make sure to print them sharp and clear.
HARDCOPIES ARE UNCONTROLLED. Controlled Documents reside electronically. Individuals using an uncontrolled
copy are responsible for ensuring that they are using the latest revision of this document.

• The color of the QR code should be different enough from the background color so
that the camera can decode the QR Code.
• If the distance between the pixels of the QR Code and the adjacent graphic elements
is too small, the QR code cannot be decoded, the quiet zone for the small QR shall be
0.05 inches and 0.15 inches for the big QR.
• Make sure the human readable is legible.
• Avoid printer artifacts like banding.

5.3 Number of Labels and Label Position

Shipping labels should be placed on containers and pallets as specified in AIAG publication
“Trading Partner Labels Implementation Guidelines” (ANSI standard MH10.8.2).

Figure 5.1 shows the Label position for the content label. One (1) copy of the Content
Label should be affixed to the longer side of the box, on the lower right side. The top of
the label should be within 150 mm of the base of the cardboard box. Dimension “a” is
constrained thus:

1 inch < a < 3 inches (25 mm < a < 75 mm). See below figure.
