Habitat is the natural environment where animals live, find food and
interact with other animals. They are grouped according to their
environment namely LAND ANIMALS also known as Terrestrial animals that
live in land, WATER ANIMALS also known as Aquatic animals that live in
water, and AIR ANIMALS also known as Aerial animals that live in the air.
These animals have different body parts and each part has functions.
The following are the functions of animals’ body parts.
For Sensing
Most animals have eyes, ears and nose that help them sense their
surroundings. Some animals use special body parts for sensing. Butterflies, ants,
shrimp, crabs and many other animals have antennas on their heads. An
3
antenna is a body part that can be used for feeling, hearing, smelling and
tasting.
For Movement
Animals’ ways of movement depend on their body parts for movement.
Animals with strong legs and feet walk and run. Horses, carabaos, deer,
and ostrich are examples of these animals.
Most insects have wings and legs like flies, bugs and beetles. Birds and
bats also have feet and wings. They fly and walk too.
Fish have fins. They swim. Animals with flippers like whales, penguins and
marine turtles also swim.
For Food Getting
The mouth of an animal is adapted to the kind of food it gets and eats.
Look at a carabao and a horse. They use their flat teeth to crushing and
chewing grass. Dogs, cats, lions and tigers are animals with strong jaws and
pointed teeth at the side of the mouth.
Birds have beaks that they use for picking grains or cracking nuts.
A butterfly uses its tube-like proboscis to sip the nectar.
Most fish use their teeth to catch and crush their food. A squid uses its
tentacles to catch food and push it into its stomach
Clams and other shellfish have hairlike parts called cilia that sweep tiny
animals in the water to the open shell and into the mouth.
Spiders use their fangs to capture animals for food.
For Protection
Animals have body coverings that protect them from heat and cold.
Animals like dogs and cats have fur. Birds have feathers and fish have scales.
Other animals like turtles, crabs, and snails have shells.

Learning is fun, right? Now let’s do more!
