1. This paper consists sections A, B and C with the total of eleven (11) questions
2. Answer all questions in both section A and B and only two questions in
Section C
3. Section A carries Sixteen (16) marks, section B fifty four (54) marks and
section C Carries thirty (30) marks.
4. Non-programmable calculator may be used.
5. Speed and accuracy are very important tools for this examination.

7. Don’t dirtify your work by rubbing with a pen and un necessary cancelling
8. Where necessary the following constants may be used:
i. Density of water = 1000 kg/m3 or 1 g/cm3.

of conservation of linear momentum. One student state as “If an external
force is applied to the colliding system, the total momentum before collision
is equal to the total momentum after collision” but Luiza from form two
was confused, now you as a physics taker correct the statement to make
luiza not confused from what she learn in the class. (4 marks)

(b) A 4kg object is acted upon by three horizontal forces: force I is 20N to
the right, force II is 8N to the left. If the acceleration of an object is 0.75m/s2
to the left, what is the magnitude and direction of force III? (5 marks)
4. (a) A man is walking inside a bus which is travelling at 56.2km/h.If the
speed of the man relative to the ground is 55.8km/h, is he walking towards
the front or the back? Explain your answer. (4 marks)
(b) Paulina and shalon are doing the vector walk lab.Starting at the door of
their classroom, they walk 3 meters, south. They make a right hand turn and
walk 17 m, west. They turn right hand again and walk 2 meters, north. They
then turn left and walk 38 meters. What is the magnitude of their overall
displacement? (5 marks)
5. (a) A physics teacher defined to a class five students the word “force” as is
the pull or push experienced by an object. But still kipanga who was a class
five student was confused. You as a form three student provide four points
to convince kipanga on the meaning of force by relaying on the results of
force. (4 marks)
(b) The diagram in Figure below shows a rectangular block immersed in
water in sea water density 1100 kg/m3. What is the difference in pressure
between the bottom and the top surfaces of the block? (5 marks)

6. (a) Does the the formula define Ohm’s Law every time? Explain
your answer. (4 marks)
(b) Two wires A and B are made of the same material .A has half the length
and twice the diameter of B .What is the ratio of the resistance of B to that
of A? (5 marks)
7. (a) A driver found the car tyre is empty of air. He repaired the tyre by lifting
it to a certain height from the ground. What is an appropriate device that a
driver used to lift a car. State the principle that governed the operation of the
device. (4 marks)
(b) A student half-filled a container with water, boiled the water for several
minutes with the cork removed. Then later replaced the cork and poured
some cold water on the container. State and explain the observation made.

8. (a) Mr fred is a computer technician, he was troubleshooting a computer
motherboard by using a digital multimeter and unfortunately he discovered
that an electronic device labeled as 100 𝜇𝐹 was defective, identify a labeled
device and give the role played by such electronic device. (4 marks)

(b) Roxie-ane is a form one student, she said that she do not know the
device which is used to identify the sign of charge, you as a friend of her,
how will you help her to understand that device by describing it with a well
labeled diagram of such device. (5 marks)
9. (a) Why does a cyclist often zigzag when going up a hill? (3 marks)
(b) A crank handle with a length of 30cm is attached to an axle with a radius
of 5cm and is used to lift a bucket of water from a deep well. If the bucket of
water weighs 120N and friction is negligible.
(i) How much force is required to turn the crank? (3 marks)
(ii) Determine the number of turns of the crank required to raise the bucket
to the surface if the well is 510m deep. (3 marks)

9. (a)The figure below shows a water manometer connected to a laboratory gas
supply.

(i) Explain why water and not mercury is used as a manometer fluid?

(ii) What is the total pressure of a gas? (3 marks)
(b) A boat travelling at 13.6 km/h relative to the water in in a river. The boat
aims straight for the opposite bank of the river which is 128.7 m wide. If the
speed of water in a river is 3.8 km/h, how far downstream will the boat be
when it reaches the opposite side? (9 marks)
10.(a) Explain why a ship cannot overturn when hit by strong wave on one
side? (5 marks)
(b) A uniform metre rule of weight 0.9 N is suspended horizontally by two
vertical loops of thread A and B placed at 20 cm and 30 cm from its ends
respectively. Find the distances from the centre of the rule at which a 2 N
weight must be suspended:
(i) To make loop A become slack; (5 marks)
(ii) To make loop B slack. (5 marks)
11.(a) Can we reduce friction to zero by polishing surfaces or using large
amount of lubricants? (3 marks)

(b) Joshua has to push a lighter box and john has to push a similar heavier
box on the same floor. Who will have to apply larger force and why?

(c) In a car, the brakes stop the tyres while friction between the tyres and the
road surface stops the car. On a wet road the coefficient of kinetic friction
between the road surface and the tyre is 0.1. Two similar cars, A and B, are
travelling at speeds of 15m/s and 30m/s, respectively. Brakes are suddenly
applied on each of the cars. How far will each of the cars travel before
coming to a stop? (9 marks)
