Activity 5

This document contains instructions for an engineering mechanics activity from the College of Engineering at Batangas State University. Students are asked to solve three problems analyzing forces in truss structures using methods of joints and sections. They must determine member forces and whether each member is in tension or compression. The problems involve calculating forces in a multi-member truss, forces in specific truss members, and resolving forces at pins supporting a suspended cylinder. Students must show their work and express final answers to four decimal places.

Activity 5

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: Answer all the problems with full honesty and integrity. Box
and express your final answer in four decimal places.

1. Determine the force in each member of the truss using method of joints, and state if the
members are in tension or compression. At the end of your solutions, make a summary of all
your answers. (20 points)

2. Using method of sections, determine the force in members CD, CJ and KJ of the truss which
serves to support the deck of a bridge. State if these members are in tension or compression.
(20 points)

3. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of force at pins B and C. The suspended
cylinder has a mass of 75 kg. (20 points)
