Division

When we divide we share equally. That

means there is the same number in each
group.

If you had sweets and shared them equally

between you and a friend, it would only be
fair if you both had exactly the same
amount.
Division - sharing
• First we are going to look at Division through
sharing.

• Watch these next examples and then it will be

your turn to have a go.

• Look how the objects are shared equally, one

at a time. You will need to do the same.
10 2 = 5
6 3= 2
12 3 = 4
Now it’s your turn to do some
sharing!
• Use coins as counters or any objects you
have at home to have a go at practically
sharing the activities on the next few
pages.
Imagine your parent gave you
money and ask you to share it
with your brother/sister. How are
you going to divide the money
equally?
15 5 = 3
10 2 = 5
18 3 = 6
8 4= 2
20 10 = 2
20 5 = 4
9 3= 3
12 4 = 3
16 4 = 4
12 6 = 2
10 5 = 2
Division - Grouping
To help us solve division mentally we can use
grouping.

Get 12 cubes and put them into groups of 2.

12 ÷ 2 = 6
Now try with 20 counters – can you put them in
equal groups of 5?

Get 10 counters – can you put them in equal

groups of 2?
Solving division mentally
• We can use ‘grouping’ to solve division quickly by counting in
groups of 2, 5, 10 on our fingers.
WELL DONE!!!
