CHAPTERS ‘ COMMUNICATION AIDS AND STRATEGIES USING TOOLS OF TECHNOLOGY ‘ * The problem that we have is not globalization. The problem is a lack of global governance. ~Professor Klaus Schwab LearNING Outcomes This chapter is expected to facilitate student’s ability to: 1. develop a conscious consideration of audience and context in presentations; and 2. present ideas in local and global settings using appropriate registers and varied means. Your Presentation Matters In the earlier discussion, we have learned that communication is an inseparable tool in the management of globalization. Globalization has brought about technological advances as people connect or communicate with the others of diverse origin and characteristics#The management of communication involves careful planning, execution, and sustainability. All these start from the fact that if you want to convey your thoughts to the global.communities, you have to present these ideas as well ag you present yourself. What makes presentation important#Presenting your ideas is like selling yourself, When others are convinced to accept your ideas, it is like they accept you and from there you build a connection in terms of friendship, affiliation, partnership, and community. This may appear simple because communication is natural in.man. However, not all aaah ae are successful. There are ‘imes that even a well-crafted presentation can never be understood because it is poorly delivered (Pearson, et al., 2008). Therefore, it involves talent and ‘skill in trying to convey ideas and emotions. Additionally, several technological devices have quickly surfaced around the globe, making communication and the presentation of communication either simple or complicated. Although technology is said to aid communication, problems can arise especially when it is not properly used. Another problem is the reality that not everyone has full if not no access at all to this technology. Still, if one wants to belong to the global community, he has to embrace the advances and learn to adopt the use of technology in order to make presentations successful. So, how can we make a good presentation ae Elmhorst & Lucas (2013) or enumerate’ iderations to prepare for a good presentation namely; the aud x , and the situation since these concepts are expected to have been learned by college students during their high school years. There are several kinds of presentations, but in this chapter, only three common categdries of presentations will be presented; tho oral, audic-visual, and the web-based presentations, Oral Presentations This is the most common and the readily available type of presentation that most people resort to. Not only in ite availability, but speaking appears to be a habit mast people cannot do without. Do not read from your notes or from your slides: Reading takes away the opportunity for your eye contact with the audience. Do it only for highlighting your points but not to discuss the whole idea. Additionally, reading crestes the idea that a apeakr may be tansed, unprepared or “not. very knowledgeable. “18: Do not speiejargons. Ae tis part ofthe speech preparation to know your audience well, it follows that you are to use words commonly known by people from ail disciplines. Turning one’s baekis like saying you do not eare about the audience. Moreover, when you turn your batk, your words will not be as clear as when you are facing your audience. Audio-Visual Presentations Ifyou want to be an effective presenter, you must choose what visual resource would best reinforce your message (Pearson, et al., 2008). Audiovisual presentations include video, PowerPoint presentations, and ‘computer graphics. Video Video has become part of man’s daily routine (Tiland, 2014). You see famous sayings on video through Facebook or you may look for some “How-to” in YouTube. In schools, students prefer lectures through videos where text, pictures, and people are alive. As Pearson, et al., (2008) agrees, videos make presentations more attractive as long as they are used for illustration and not asa replacement of the speaker. Smarta (2016) suggested five steps in using video as an effective communication tool: 1, Tell'a story. A video should tell a story. A video is used to illustrate in order to make the audience understand better and more importantly, remember the message well. Therefore, if it does not tell a story it is like not giving anything at all. You will be left to giving a story yourself in order to tell what your video conveys. When this happens, you are wasting time. 6 2. Visualize. Present your ideas in symbols, especially those that are understood at first glance, Your illustrations should be symbcls that are simple and globally accepted. Romember, your aim for a video + presentation is for easy recognition and eomprehension; do not tire your audience by giving them difficulty interpreting what your illustration conveys. : 3, Turn up the sound. Music has stimulating effect in your clips. “Good sound design can help your film become easier to understand and attention to detail will further improve its impact.” (Smarta, 2016) 4, Spread the word. Decide what is your objective and think of how you ‘can present this to the audienco, Do you want to explain your servico, communicate a milestone or attract visitors to your website? How you host and distribute the clip will determine whether it reaches the target audience and, ultimately, whether it will achieve the desired effect that makes a tangible difference to your brand. 5. fin doubt, ask an expert. It is nover wrong to ask. When you feel you ‘cannot make a good video, try asking an expert to do it for you. A good ‘quality video can be a successful aid in having your ideas accepted but poor one might make you regret as you watch your beautiful concept. destroyed by the quality of your video presentation. However, if you think you can follow through instructions and you ‘have ample time for preparation, you may visit some websites that give tutorials on video making while you make videos through their sites for free. PowerPoint Although many would claim that PowerPoint presentation is outdated, survey would say that it continues to be the most accessible and utilized by many, both in the academe and business fields. Care in using the PowerPoint is necessary as it can ruin a presentation when not used properly, Computer Graphics “Computer graphics has become a widely used, convenient tool for speech studies” as claimed by Denes (2005) who added that it has effectively improved man-machine interaction, As defined by Hemmendinger (2018), computer graphics are images on computers for use in any medium, ‘Those images used in the graphic design of printed material are frequently produced on computers, or as still and moving images seén in comic strips and animations, Raster and vector graphics All-compater art is digital, but there aro two very different ways of drawing digital images on a computer screen, known a rastet and vectorigraphies. Its the aspect of being able to the content being viewed by readers that really set blogs apart from traditional websites. 5. Vlog.-A vlog is a form of blog for which the medium is video, and is a form of web television. Viog entries often combine embedded video (or 2 video link) with supporting text, images, and other metadata, Entries can be recorded in one take or cut into multiple parts Multimodal Text: A Combination Of Presentation Types ‘The Vietoria State Government (2018) defines multimodal text as texts that combine two or more modes of communication including visual, oral, audio, gestural and spatial patterns of meaning, The level of digital technology requirements for this presentation type ranges from very simple options such as slide presentations through complex, sophisticated forms requiring a higher level of technical and digital media skills. The choice is yours depending on your skill and experience, level of confidence, and the resources and tools available to you, Here are applications that help create multimodal texts: 1, Comic Maker HD 2. Voice Recorder Pro 3. Tellagami 4. Pie Collage Cc 5. Kinemaster ‘The idea in any multimodal text presentation is the utilization of the various facets of communication and metacognition. It is expected that as you engage in the creation of a multimodal text, all senses are involved. You et tosec and write the text or ereate visuals, you hear what they speak, you feel tho emotion of the story and most importantly, you are thinking what you are thinking as you create and finally present your multimodal project. ———————_——————$—— a 18
